Off Roading need some help

Just like the title says... ... .

Cam has been in since 5-07 has about 5000 miles on it. The wear is only on the intake lobes, no damage to any of the exhaust lobes. All the tappets appear in good condition also.

what say you?

Dave

Hey Forrest, long time no see.....

yep, regrind i put in last year, about 5000 miles on it now. Weird thing is only the intake lobes look like this  60lbs springs intake and exhaust, head has been done for a year before the cam went in, and the OE cam still looks perfect.

I am gonna get some pictures of the exhaust lobes up tonight after work and let ya'll have a look at them. i am gonna ship it back and let them have a look at it.

Dave

no idea why the intake lobes would be worn more. do you have a cam card w/ the specs on it? seems like if it were coil bind, you would have had more issues earlier unless it was just right there on the very edge.

might need some custom springs matched to the cam.

I wouldn't go with another regrind though

Depending on the profile, and the original cam used for the regrind, the profile may have gone through the surface hardening exposing non-hardened areas of the lobe.

Maybe I should show you'll the pic of the new cam that snapped in my motor.

Cams are not the best topic for me but a heck of alot better than pumps.

Jim

Dave your nice, I'd put it back in and run it then maybe pull it later and check it out for wear again.

Here's one for you, I pulled the motor out of the 01' and guess what, no billet cam, there was at one time..... lol, it had a stocker in it.

Jim

What made you remove the reground cam in first place? Doing other work inside and saw it or was the truck acting up?

Bored... ..... it's february and dragstrip is closed til march :-laf

Truck was running fine with no issues, drive everyday back and forth to work... . well not today :-laf. My dad and i didn't have anything to do, and i already had the gaskets.

I checked the springs tonight as best i can for coil bind, none that i can tell. The 60lbs springs have the white paint mark on them still intact and i can't see any shiny areas where the coils have touched

Dave

I have seen several regrinds that all look like yours. All of the ones I have seen are from one particuliar company... ... As mentioned above I believe it has to do with the grind vs the original cam.

has any body had their reground cam heat treated or even cryogenic treated. I have a reground cam wating to go in a 12v and had thought about this, and wondered how well this would be if any.

Jim, I thought A billet cam required some real machine work to the block  How anyone put a stock cam back in where a billet had been?

Dave

Most guys run bushings in all the journals when running a billet cam..... You can do the same thing with an OEM cam.

I was told either coil bind or possibly the retainer hitting the seal, not sure? Said it was still Rockwell 53 on the nose, they were going to chuck it up and see if it had the right taper. I checked coil bind, so i don't think that was it.

It gets better though, UPS broke the cam in half on the way back to the grinder for inspection, and i didn't have it insured for a nickle #@$%! I ship people's stuff all over all the time insured out the wazoo and never put a dime on my own stuff,

The grinder still split the difference with me, plus i had a core cam for them off another engine, so it worked out fair. I think they were fair with me (the grinder, NOT UPS). I have since reinstalled the OE cam and will probably run it for a while (this season?) I can tell the difference on spool up though. Regardless of the cam failure, it made a real difference spooling up a silver bullet. If i ever do it again it will be a new cam, no more regrinds for me. Oh well, 1st time is tuition, 2nd time is just punishment ;)
