What's your best milage with a 04.5 600?

Someone else suggested a poll to see what kind of milage the 600's are getting. Now that there are enough of these that have been out for a while, this should be a good time to do it. Enter your best milage that you calculated under normal conditions. Let's not use numbers like 26 MPG coasting down I-70 into Denver for 40 miles or readings from the overhead computer, but stick to realistic numbers that are repeatable. "Be honest, this is for posterity" (from "The Princess Bride). The results of the poll will be a bit misleading since there are so many truck configurations that affect milage, but it should help see the range of numbers. Feel free to make any comments.

I think it would be great If we could add a colum for dually and non. I assume duallys get worse and it would be nice to know what duallys are getting. On the freeway here in seattle at 65mph I average 16mpg and around town 12. 5mpg only have 1300 miles on her. Marv

Duallie or not? Well, then auto or not and 4x4 or not and... I can pretty much guess when looking at a 600 mileage report wether or not it is auto or 4x4. George

I thought about those issues when I created the poll. I don't know of anyway to set up a poll to record that information short of having a separate poll for each major configuration. The problem then is that they get separated from each other based on when the last repsonse was, plus you can't see the results together. Feel free to leave comments with your specific configuration and results.

First and only fillup

302 miles, 19. 132 gallons, hand calculated at 15. 785 MPG. I filled it up and the fuel clicked off, and I did that two more times, just barely flowing fuel the last 2 times to minimize foaming.



Driving was half around town, half highway. Have been easy on go pedal, and never WOT. On highway, other than a couple times running at 70MPH (speed limit) for a couple seconds to just see what it sounded like, never ran over 1800 RPM. Don't know if winter or summer fuel - dealer filled up for me before I picked it up last Friday.



I don't know how this compares to my 01. I bought it used with 12,000 miles. So, I have never "awakened" a new Cummins before. So far, I have resisted the urge to see how much power it has - but it is getting harder

My absolute best was hand calculated at 17. 68. BUT, I think my numbers may be unreliable. The damn fuel fill seems to be screwing with me.



What I mean is, I buy fuel as soon as the light comes on, next station, I get fuel. Now, it seems that if I Pump the fuel, I can put up to 29 gallons in it. If I let an attendant fill it up, 26 is what it takes. Irregardless, my highway (empty) mileage hovers between 16 and 17. 5.



Does anyone else have a 34 gallon tank, that only seems to "take" 26 gallons before the pump shuts off? If so, what can I do to fix it? I'd like to actually drive the extra 80+ miles out of my truck. That would save me from fueling every two days to every three... .

If you watch the "miles to empty" display on the overhead computer, you can (or at least I can) take it down to 0 miles to go and still have several gallons left. You really do have a 34 gallon tank, and with some experience, you will know how far to let it go. Any errors in calculating milage will average out over several tanks, so don't worry about how full you get it. I always stop at the 1st shutoff. Your numbers look good. Enjoy.

The reason why is stated in my owners manual. When the gauge reads absolute true E and the Distance to Empty is really 0, there is a programmed 8% reserve. On my 35 gallon tank, that is 2. 8 gallons just so you don't run out.

I have a 04. 5, 3500, SRW, QC, 3. 73, 6-speed, 8' Harbor Utility Body, weighs 7500lbs. I received the truck with 41 miles and a supposedly full tank and showing 11mpg on the overhead. I drove 528 miles and stopped to fill with 6 miles to showing on the overhead and patiently put 36. 5 gallons in a 35 gallon tank. Filled it to the rim with clear fuel showing at the top of the filler neck. The overhead showed 15. 7mpg and hand calculating the 528 miles on 36. 449 gallons comes out to 14. 49mpg. I do not believe that the truck was full when I got it, so the next tank fill will be much more accurate. All the mileage has been pretty much freeway with a bit of stop-n-go and I keep it around 70mph which is around 2100-2200. I would have like a 3. 55 gear. On the drive home today, the overhead was showing 17. 6mpg. One last thing:

This is a

KALIFORNIA MODEL. So those in this fair state, there is hope for decent mileage afterall.
