We hear a lot of stuff (good and bad) about Dodge service departments, but I can't recall ever hearing any comments about Cummins service shops. For those who have had engine work done at a Cummins shop, what was your opinion of the experience?

I had the VE injection pump and the lift pump on my '92 replaced at Cummins Northwest here in Anchorage a couple of years ago. I was happy with the work, and the knowledge of the guys I talked to there.

The only downside that I see is their shop rate--$95/hour! Their parts prices are just fine, so I go there for whatever parts I may need, but if something needs to be done that's beyond my expertise, I may go somewhere else depending on the nature of the problem.

I took my 98 there when the VP44 crapped the bed. After three days the guy calls me and tells me they can't fix it and to come get it. The service manager walked out. took a look at all the mods and told the mechanic to put it all back together. He said he didn't want the liability. That was at Cummins Southern Plains in Dallas. That was my only experience with Cummins service.

Cummins NW did my vp44. They now get 104 and hour I think. Its worth it to me. Much faster than the dealer and its done right and the way I ask. They reinstalled my drag comp on my new pump.

I was just in monday and had my valves adjusted. Walked over to Anchorage chrysler to scope some of the new 600s.

I plan on having their local shop do a coolant flush and refill for me (using Fleetguard premix EG). I had no idea they charged so much labor! I hope their service is worth the cost.

Cummins Service

After 2 DC visits to Diagnose/Fix stumble and hesitation-I went to Cummins SE.

Diagnosed problem in a half day, DC picked up truck and Replaced VP-44 under warranty.

The Cummins SE parts Guys are the best.

I got a new LP for $112-because I buy all of my truck and generator service parts from them. When the warranty expires, I will use them. Worth every penny!

I had the Cummins shop in Billings Mont. work on my 99 in hopes that they could improve the mileage. They adjusted the valves & hooked up the computer and reset a few things that DC had supposedly messed up. They were friendly & professional. But alas, it was to no avail. No mileage improvement. Left about $250 poorer. But the valves needed adj. anyway, I guess:rolleyes:

I took my Dodge to the local Cummins shop, Interstate Cummins. They were very nice, liked my truck and seemed to enjoy working on it. They showed me around and I looked at several school buses with a 5. 9 CTD, thats something you don't see to often, A pick-up engine in such a large vehicle. Where were all the Duramax and 6. 0L diesels????? I guess that is the difference between light and Medium duty engines?

Anyhow I enjoyed the experience, which is much , much more then I can say about taking it to the Dodge dealer. The Cummins guys made me feel very comfortable, not just with me personally, but with there ability to service my truck right.

I made an appointment today to have my coolant flushed at the end of the month. They said it will run about $250.

Over the years of owning Dodge CTDs, I've used Cummins Southern Plains in Fort Worth, TX several times and Cummins Southern Plains in Amarillo, TX once. I have no complaints about the quality of work, labor prices, or parts. They had the truck ready to go at or before the time promised. (My trucks were bone stock except for gauges. )

I also had the Fort Worth store do warranty work on my Onan generator. They did an excellent job fixing it... to bad Generac doesn't have a service network like Onan, but that's another story!

I can second Bill's comments about Cummins Southern Plains in Ft. Worth. I have had them do valve adjustments and also a lift pump replacement on my '97, each time I have been there they have been courteous, professional, and completed the work on my truck by the promised time.

The quality of their work has been great, the mechanics did good work and paid attention to the details - no scratches, missing parts, or half-a$$ed work. Their labor charges seemed fair to me compared to the huge $$$ I have spent at dealerships over the years to apparently have some chimp with a rock beat on the engine.

If you are in the Dallas area and need some work done, give Andy Redmond a call. He is a TDR member and does great work at reasonable prices - good alternative to Cummins IMHO. Only downside is he has a nice truck and when you see the mods you start thinking "Hmmm for only a few more $$$$ I could... . " :D :D

Mike,

I couldn't agree more... Andy is a good honest guy who does excellent work!!:D :D

BTW, he gives a lot of free advice on the TDR web site too.

The Cummins dealer in southeastern Wisconsin wasn't very helpful when I asked about enabling the high idle for cold weather. They didn't even know what I was talking about, didn't bother to look and just shoo'ed me to the Dodge dealer.
