What's your opinion?

I need your opinion. I've joined the Army and want to know what you think of my decision. I joined partially because of the terrorist attacks, but I had been thinking about it for about 2 years. The attack made my decision easy. Some people have said they're very proud of me. Others have called me crazy, stupid and told me to wait until there is nothing going on to join. What do you think?

You have to march to the beat of your own drummer. If you waited until everything is ok you would wait forever. Life has no guarantees. Go in and live your life to the fullest. I of course am too old but I would not think twice if I was 19 or 20. A lot of men and women have served their country in the different branched of the armed forces and believe me they are appreciated! I served 4 years in the Air Force on a B-36 and on one occasion we were loaded with bombs and hi encindery(sp) ammo. We were ready to go with no questions asked. I wish you lots of luck and my thoughts and prayers go with you and all the others who serve under trying times.

I'm SERIOUSLY considering re-enlisting. I have a work commitment 'till December 31 but after that it's all up in the air. That gives me 3 more months to ponder we'll see. Good luck. Remember that they might kill you but they can't eat you Just curious what MOS did you sign up for?

If you feel good about joining the Army, it doesn't matter what others think. The people who feel that you should wait until peace-time to join up really have no clue as to what happens during that time to our military forces... cutbacks in the forces. I think that anyone who joins up right now is very ballsy and believes what they are doing is for the greater good of the people.



Just remember that if you are a single guy, that the military is your 1st wife... and what a witch she can be a times...

Keep your weapon clean,your mouth shut,your ammo dry,and your head down. Enjoy,it will be a time in your life to remember and tell the grandkids about... .....

Thanks for all of the replies so far everyone. For those that are wondering I'm going to be a Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic. I'll be working on anything from Hummers up to 5 tons. Thanks again for the votes and replies.

The only mistake so far is you didn't join the Corps. But I've got a sailor son and a soldier daughter so even my own are imperfect.

I think it wouldn't hurt every 18 year old to do at least two years service of some kind. (I think this is the way in Germany) I know I was 17 and couldn't wait to get away from home. After about a week in Basic I wished I was back home. It got better tho and I don't regret it for a minute. I didn't see any action but I spent 2yrs. in Germany in a Pershing Nuclear unit. (We always carried live rounds). I was a 63S(heavy wheeled veh. mechanic). Also Army. Both older brothers were jarheads . So i caught hell from them for joining the army. Be all that you can be be proud and be careful. Doug

Remember, you are not willing to die for your country, you are willing to KILL for your country. Let the other poor ******* die for his cause, just help him get there faster.

Only you can decide if you choice was the correct one. These are grave times and that brings out the best people. People have many different reasons for joining. None of them are wrong. There are talkers and there are doers. We all know who they are. As someone stated earlier, it is what you make it. It can be the best job in the world and it can be the worst one. It is all the matter of your perspective. There should be no inter-service ribbing going on. This is not going to be something done only by the Air Force or even active duty personnel only. Everyone is going to have to do his or her part. Good luck, pay attention in boot camp. Your training will help you when you need it the most. Always be on the look out for opportunities for additional training, it can only help you. When is your entry date?

Took a week? Memory fails me but I think I spent maybe two or three days processing in then got meet my DI To say that I was $$tless is an understatement. Having been drafted, I did what I had to do. Ended up in Germany also, in 1970 (8" SP Howitzer with Nuke capabilities). My brother, drafted in 68', got stationed in Hawiaii. We lucked!



Take advantage of every opportunity to learn. It will carry you through life.

Wouldn't be much of a military if everyone got in during peace time and got out when a war started.



You will never regret your military experience. I see the Enterprise on the news out in the indian ocean and yearn to be there sometimes. I had a peace time stint myself, unless you count Grenada. But I was willing to go into harms way if need be. In traveling the world I got to see what a truly great country we live in and if they needed an old fart like me to defend it I'd still be willing to go!
