2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Wheel Swapping

Ok i found a steel Chrome wheel for my 96 truck to replace a bent one but i also found some Alloy wheels off a 2001 truck and they are 8 inches wide where my steel on my 96 are 6. 5 wide . Any one know for sure if these alloy wheels will work or not ? . Guy at tire shop doesnt think so ,he also thought they might work if i had 4 wheel drive , but i dont have 4x4 . Arnie
