Drove my new 2004. 5 on a gravel road today and thought I was being attacked! My '99 had some sort of "wheel well liners" ( for lack of a better word) which kept the noise down to a level and I never heard the rocks. The new 04. 5 doesn't have these liners so the rocks being kicked up by the wheels are very noisy. The liners weren't metal, some sort of soft material which made it a lot quieter and easier to clean also.

Anybody else notice this or am I being *picky*?

i have heard that noise, like a deep thunk. the factory liner is a partial piece on the back only. anything else it hits is metal.

but when the gravel hits the bottom of the aluminum running boards - wow! does it ring. even water makes noise hitting the running boards.

Larv,

Do a search on "wheel well liners". There was a thread about them a month or two ago. They are available from the dealer.

As I recall, the general consensus was that they are relatively inexpensive, install easily, do a good job, and are generally worth the money.
