I haven't see the article, but this almost happened to my mother-in-law. She has a 4x4 Durango and at about 55-60k the front ball joints were so bad that when she took it in complaining about a "noise in the front" they wouldn't let her leave without signing paperwork stating that they warned her that the car was unsafe to drive.
She left it at the dealer and I went over after work to have a look (just to be sure nothing fishy was going on) and sure enough when you took the load off the front end it pretty much just came apart. The ball joints were all *badly* wore out.
My borther-in-law has a 2000 dakota 4x4 which isn't any better. He's had several thousands of dollars worth of parts replaced on it due to the poorly designed front end.
