I got an 05 diesel new. . At 200 miles I installed an AMSOIL by-pass oil filter... I now have 5400 miles and the book says either 7500 or 15000k miles . . I an on the 15000 driving part... So should I wait or change it sooner..... money is not the issue... waste is... Thanks, Garth

i see you got the right filter, but you didnt say if you had the oil. if you are using the amsoil 15-40 or the 5-30 diesel oil then i would go with what they recommend---25k with there filters or longer with oil analisis! good luck :-laf

if its factory oil iwould chang it first at 2,000 miles or sooner because of the breakin metals and other junk thats in there, after the first changeits up to you. i ran delo up to 14k then started with amsoil now i run oil analisys got almost 30k on it :-laf

food for thought-----change the fluid in your power stering, front and rear diff, transfer case and transmission as soon as possible the factory fluid sucks! :--)

Spoken like a true salesman. I don't agree that they suck. Dodge puts Valvoline 15W-40 in, Synthetic differential fluid in Diffs, Transfer Case, and transmission. I know that there are many choices out there that are better, particularly synthetics, but I don't think they suck.

As to the question. I have usually split the difference on the interval for the first oil change. I will change the oil on mine at around 3700 miles. I change the diff oils at 15k, then every 30 after that, but I don't tow. I do the auto transmission at the scheduled interval.

Dont be so cheap, hell I changed my the first 500 miles and the crap that came out was unreal.

There is no such thing as 'break in oil' Years ago, when rings were extremely hard, yes, factories used non-detergent oils to assist break in.

Not so today.

Sand from the cores, machine filings, bearing crap. . You will be surprised at the junk ifyou cut open your oil filter.

Get it done... . NOW!

I also changed my oil at 500 miles. I know it might be overkill, but I don't have to worry that I waited too long. There's lots of debate on this subject, but I'd change it now if I were you.

5400 miles !!!! Man, get that stuff outta there!! As for the synthetics I would wait till about 20k before running it in the engine, other components, fine.
