I received my $500 certificate from Dodge, but in the fine print, it stated the HO wasn't available in CA, MA, or ME.

I had no problem ordering my '01 with the HO.

I was just at the Dodge site configuring an '03, but in this touchy-feely, liberal, drunk Kennedy, Santa-Claus, hand outs for everyone (unless you WORK!!!!) state, I can't get the HO. I could get by with the standard engine if I could get the 6-speed transmission; but that's not possible.

Now I know how the guys (the ones that stand up to pee) in CA feel; How do you go around the rules and regs? All help greatly appreciated. Thanks .

What!?! it doesn't have anything to do with emissions does it? (since we don't have emissions testing). just buy one in NH, RI, or CT then?

98Rammer,

according to my offer, the HO isn't available in ME, MA, or CA. I thought of the out of state purchase, but someone said it isn't that easy. Any help from fellow TDR members appreciated. Thanks

I live in Massachusetts and am hoping to buy an HO next year also.

Is an HO really not available here?

If not, why?

If I buy one out of state, will I have any problems registering it?

If so, what have other people done to get around it? I've read that in California, you can bring one in if it has over 7,500 miles on it. Also read some stuff about dual registrations. Will any of these tricks apply in MA?

Bob, what dealer did you order from, if you don't mind my asking. .

I read a post where one of the CA guys was doing a dual registration in another state and then dumping the out of state registration after a year. Requires a good relative or friend in a nearby state. Is there anything stopping you from buying and registering it in a nearby state and then reregistering it in your state after a year?

Well my solution is that my mother in law is registered as part owner in Nevada as well as Kalifornia  , I have it registered in Kaliforina with a nevada address, then is 7 or 8 months I'm going to change address and pull her name. Pain the rear differential, but should work out fine. :D

NO HO??

I don't know if i'm reading the post wrong or just not understanding the problem:confused: I bought a 2002 HO back in April 02 at Ira Dodge in Medford and had no problem. What am I missing here.

LUCKED OUT

Sorry to hear about the 03s,I don't know about HO ban . I'm glad I got mine when I did. I always hated this state for stupid regs and laws so when the BIGDIG is finally over I'm moveing to Maine, have land on Sebago lake -party+camp- all year round up there but will build on it soon. Then I'll change my screen name to

MAINEIAC:-laf

Hi Bob,

You hit my sore subject !

CA, MA, and ME prohibit the HO due to emissions. Under the Clean Air Act, any state may adopt the CAA emissions requirements, or the emission requirement of any state that EXCEEDS the CAA requirements, like CA.

So, MA jumped on board, I presume, to be a good liberal state. I think Maine did it because we are still trying to convince the northeast that we actually have people living here that drive cars. We should have given up on that long ago.

To buy an HO you will have to (initially) register it out-of-state or get a dual registration (the BMV people here have never heard of that). You can only register it in MA if it is used. I still don't know what the definition of 'used' is, but I believe in CA it is > 7500 miles and some time period, I don't know what.

I am going to be working on contract in NH next year so that is probably when I'll go after an HO using my NH apartment address. I am still researching. It is going to be a pain to re-register it in ME.

Write your congressman about it, I have mine.

BTW, even if you buy the SO engine in CA, MA, or ME you can enjoy 15 less hp than the SO in every other state. It is a programmed de-tuning just to make sure you don't enjoy yourself too much!

It is a totally useless law. Whew, I feel better now!

Well said OHale, the next legislation will be on the emissions on horse poop, so the Amish had better start using bags on their horses like they do on Mackinaw Island, MI ;) .

LOL, great post Dean!

I've been to Mackinaw Island (AKA 'fudgie island'). I moved out of northern MI some years ago, and they didn't have bags on the horses then. How ridiculous!

I must say the one of the few things I enjoyed about Mackinaw Island was watching the tourists' (fudgies) faces when a carriage horse dropped a load next to their sidewalk cafe table! I also recall a group of well-dressed young ladies dancing and yelling 'eeeewww' as a torrent of horse urine ran down the street onto their shoes.

No point in going back now!

I hated the place. My wife loves the shopping, but the smell of fudge and horse poop together will be forever embedded in my brain. Made me quit chocolate for a while.

mdepot, I bought my '01 at Tri-State Dodge in Dudley. At the Woodstock Fair, a dealer from CT had an '03 Cummins; they are quieter, but still have the distinctive Cummins sound. My wife liked it because it's not as loud as the '01. I liked the bigger quad cab for the kids.

rub thier noses in it

Even though they banned them in Maine ,I can still move there and drive around town with my HO:-laf . I'm glad I have one already and hopefully grandfathered in. I feel bad for those who want to buy an 03 in those states:{

Bigdig, you and I both can buy a 2002 HO. It is the 2003 that is the issue. You would be going from MA to ME, two of the three states that forbid 2003 HOs.

I'll get an HO next spring. Where there's a will there's way. ;)

Years back, I knew a guy who lived in Lawrence, MA, who owned a house or two up near No. Conway, NH. He titled and registered his vehicles in NH, but resided in MA.

The NH DMV were kind enough to send his plates and registration renewals to the Salem, NH, office, since they *knew* he lived in MA.

Just a thought. Though the politics may have changed in the intervening years.

Does anyone know when the HO will be available in MA?

A question for the folks more advanced in engine theory than I am. Some people on the board have mentioned buying a truck before it comes with the EGR valve; could someone explain the downside of the exhaust gas recirculation system?

Gas engines have had them for a while; we all know diesels ignite fuel differently than gassers. Does that have something to do with the desire to avoid the EGR in the diesel?

Any clarification on the issue is appreciated.
