Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) When did the 24 valve come out

I am in a debate on when the 12 valve was replaced with the 24 valve engine. I say the 98 model year started Aug/Sept of 97 and the 12 valve engine was used until 1-1-98 when the new emmison standards forced the use of the 24 valve engine. The other person insists that the 12 valve was installed in the trucks till June of 98.
 
I ordered a 12v in early Jan 1998.Waited and waited until mid-march and then called the dealer. Was told my original saleman had quit so my order wasn't handle right and got lost. I immediately tried to re-order the same truck but learned no more 12v. I ordered a 24v right then and received delivery April 8th, 1998. I was told it was #421 off the assembly line in St. Louis, MO. Don't know if that's true or not. I'll never buy from Larry Miller Dodge in Utah again.

Look on the bright side, you still have your truck 18 years later! That can't be said for too many vehicles.
 
Love the truck but the dealer, not so much. The truck has never let me down and as I approach the age of 68 it's the best vehicle I've ever owned and the best value for the money. I've replaced quite a few things on it to make sure it's reliable but it's a fairly easy truck to work on and every time I think about getting a new one I look at the sticker price, and think about going to another dealership, and think about how it would be to have truck payments for the next five years and go back to my baby.

Emissions changes always happen Jan 1 of the year that's why we have models like 91.5 ( when they added the intercooler ) & 98.5 ( when they went to the 24 valve). This applies to trucks in Canada as well.
 
I believe it was federally mandated 1/1/98. Emissions reasons.
I ordered mine in November 97, picked it up day after my birthday. 12/19/98.
Took a while to get, something about an Railroad strike.St Louis mfg. Seemed like forever at the time. Not that the ride I was in I "NEEDED TO GET OUT OF IT" or anything. It was an 87 Buick Grand National. Bought that one new too. Had a lotta fun in that one. 12 sec daily driver.
Several years back my Dad wanted the pu. Kept it about 6 months, threw out all the maint records (that could only have been rivaled by a aircraft mechanic) receipts (ie warranties) etc etc. Then changed his mind.:mad:
I used to have the window sticker saying it was specifically made for me.
IIRC it cost me $34.800 out the door. Best car/pu I ever had. I do miss the GN though from time to time.
 
Bob I posted this on NW Bombers but my first CTD was a '98.5 with a truck build date of January 1998 and the 24V engine under the hood was built December 27, 1997.
