This question embarrasses me to ask of you old timers but I don't know when we went from a mechanical engine to electronic. Please help!

Also when my friend who has just purchased a 2001 CTD asks me if it has a "Chip"?, what is the correct answer?

Thank you in advance for this help...

'98. 5 was the debut of the vp44 electronically controlled injection pump.

If your buddy has you lookin' under his hood, Look for an electronic box of some sort that is possibly plugged into the rear of the injection pump through a pigtail, and the trucks stock inj. pump plug attached to a portion of the "chips" pigtail. Mike

Thank you Moparmike.

I hadn't realized it until my friend asked this question but I don't know what differentiates the generations.

Thank you again.

most commonly look and see if there is an ez sitting on the fuse box under the hood, or if there is velcro then it had one at some point.

The generations are defined by the body style. 1989 through 93's are first gen, 94 through 2002 are second gen and 2003 and up are third gen. The 24 valve engine debuted midyear 1998, so the 12 valve trucks are called 98's and the 24's are referred to as 98. 5's.
