What makes 0216 error codes reset?

Just completed a VP44 replacement yesterday morning. Truck runs much better. It's too early to tell if the mileage has improved.

Code 0216 is still set. None of the local parts places offer the code reading/resetting services any longer.

So what triggers the reset? Miles/hours/# of clean starts?

I'm pretty sure I got the gear pressed onto the shaft in the correct position. I could see the key centered up in the key slot on the gear anyway.

I'd just like to see the 0216 go away so I'm sure all is well.

NETim, I had to get a friend that had an OBD tool to clear the P0216 after I installed the new VP44 a few years ago. I bought my own OBD II later on. If I remember, I bought a middle of the road one for $90 but I've seen basic ones for around $60. Kragens, Sears, & Pepboys all have some version. I've heard after a certain amount of engine start cycles the code will go away if is not active but I'm not sure of that. I looked in my service manual and I could not find anything saying that.
Regards, Mike.

Unhooking the batteries may do it, but if you solved the reason for the code, it should go away with several restarts.

I've thought about picking up a code reader but I'm just not sure how much I'd use it.

I had both batts disconnected on the truck overnight while doing the job and the code was still set.

There was a "tech note" along with the pump in the box which said that if the pump wasn't timed correctly (the key wasn't centered in the gear's keyway) the dreaded code 0216 would be set.

Maybe I just like to worry. The truck runs and sounds much better since the new pump went in.

OK, I broke down and went to Autozone and bought a cheap Actron 9125. (It was on sale!) It reset the infamous 0216.

Now I can drive it and see if it comes back. I'm pretty sure I fixed the problem judging by the way the truck drives now.
