These are actually 2 different engines... Although the blocks of both look about the same. The damage to the block was due to heat and a valve that broke apart. As for the pic of the head and valves, we know the valve broke from the stem, valvespring was not broken. Assumption here is heat caused this although it could have been a defect in the valve itself. In either case as you can see the engines are torn up pretty good.
The point is we turn lots of heat on the 12v motors but lots of the heat goes out the exhaust due to inefficient fueling. With the 24v motors the fueling is enhanced and now the common rail really ups the ante (multiple injection events and high pressures). Heat that used to go outside the engine and was absorbed by the turbo is now inside the engine. The valves are smaller and more fragile on the 24v models. This can lead to the above pics. We are working on solutions to help with the 24v engines and survivability.
As for the engines one was a p-pumped 24v valve engine that made lots of HP and was played hard. The other was a VP engine that wasn't pushed too bad. The VP engine made lots of power but was pretty much babied when not on the dyno.....
I don't think nitrous or spray caused that . . nitrous should cool the intake charge down. . that looks like it was caused by excessive EGTs ie 1500 plus preturbo all the time and a lot of 1800 bonzia runs. . or something. . I still say if you keep it 1300 preturbo you should be good. . how hot did these engines get egt wise?
Spray wasn't the cause..... The truck with the bottom pics upon further inspection and testing was running aftermarket valvesprings. These springs pressure may have added to the mix. We are leaning more and more to a defective valve here. Egts on the egt logger never went above 1460* and even then they were only there for a few seconds. Truck was driven daily and pretty much babied.
As for the block pic, heat was the problem. Spray wasn't even on the truck when this happened. Several of the intake valves were tulip shaped though. This truck did run very high egt's and was pushed to high power.
yeah, 24v's kinda go catastrophic when they loose a valve or spring, that's why I was asking if it broke a valvespring. with both valves riding on one pushrod, when you lose a spring, the other one can get opened furthur and then stuff touches and that's bad m-kay
