I just changed my oil at 1700 miles, put in Delvac 1300 super, My question's are, When should I change to delvac 1 and should I stay with Delvac anything I need to know about this oil? I do some towing not much now. the truck has 2000 miles. When should I send the oil to be checked.

Thanks, New at this Game:)

There have been reports of failed break ins (engines always use oil) with the Cummins when folks switch to synthetic before 10K . I don't know if I really believe this or not. Synthetics are really not that much better lubricants than the best conventional oils. They just last longer. I think the failed break in problem has more to do with babying the engine during the break in period, i. e. not towing or hauling. If you want to be safe, do oil analysis every 3K. Once your wear metal levels stabilize, your engine is broken in.

Delvac 1 is good stuff. A little harder to find and more expensive than Amsoil 15W-40 which has similar performance benefits except during extremely cold weather.

JJ,

I'm mostly speaking from the realm of sport bikes on this one but... You never stick synthetic into a gasser until it has at least 5K on it. You need the time for the rigs to set in the bores. If you don't they won't seal up properly and have a constant blow-by. For the Cummins I would wait until you had at least 10K towing and 20K empty. Mine didn't really break in (no towing and TST boxes) until about 30K. At that time the mileage went up ( about 2MPG), ran smoother, and EGT's were down about 200 degrees. And on top of that the engine will run close to 400K on Dinosaur Guts and the truck will be done before then (unless you put HEAVY MILES on it yearly). Not trying to shy you away from synthetic, just wait until the engine is broken in.

Hope this helps.

Tom
