Good to be back, I was a member several yrs. ago. I have a '96 2500 auto trans. Truck have approx. 325,000 on the clock.

Transmission was just rebuilt. When should I change the fluid for the first time?

Thanks for any advice, Kirk

Just had my 95 transmission rebuilt a few months ago. The rebuilder said to change the fluid the first time after 5k miles.

You really should ask whoever did the rebuild. Depending on who it was, and how it was rebuilt, you may need to switch to a non MOPAR fluid (Dexron?).

I second this! Dave Goerend told me about 2k and he said pick any fluid and if it was not synthetic put the additive in it.

Also be careful about the brand of filter you put in. I had purchased a trans filter and didnt realize it was a cheap chinese brand until I was at home under the truck putting it in. I went ahead and put it in only to pull it right back out. The trans wouldnt shift right and acted strange. I went and got a Dana/Wix filter and it is back to normal.

Go about 1,000 miles, do a complete drain. Drain converter, loosen valve body bolts 3 turns. You get a lot more fluid out. Adjust bands re fill with chevron dextron (costco cheap) with a bottle of red lubeguard. Go 5K do the same as above then use Ams/Oil Universal ATF with lubeguard then check it with oil analasys at 20K. Just my opinion.

Do you have a way to drain yours?

I have a DTT aftermarket trans. Most aftermarket converters come with a drain plug. If yours is stock you can disconnect one of the trans lines where it connects at the front by the radiator. Do a search on fluid change and it will go into detail how to flush the fluid.

DTT has stoped doing a drain plug on their converters because of over torqueing of the drain plugs and stripping the threads.

Change every 30k or once a year with ATF+4 and you should be good.
