The time to replace is when you buy the truck and bring it home. The factory shocks are garbage.
Yeah I don't think their garbage, I made it through all the 48 lower states (towing 18k), and a few of them 2 or 3 times with the stock shocks and still going. No leaks, no bounce or wear on tires from bad shocks.

The shocks on my '09 Ram 4500 were just as good as new with 70K miles on it and about 90% towing heavy. I think the manufacturers are installing higher quality shocks than they used to. The shocks on my '03 Ram 2500 4x4 lasted 100K miles when I upgraded to Bilsteins. This is a good thing, at least for my experience. Cheers, Ron

My stock shocks went back and forth between two states (without towing anything) with 95% highway driving and couldn’t last 30K miles. All four were leaking around 20K miles. When I replaced them, I could push them in with one hand against the garage floor and they would not come back out on their own. That to me, is garbage.

I replaced my 10 year old shocks on my 2008 at 113,000 miles. No leaks and would not push in by hand when they were removed. Now have Bilstein's 5100 on the truck.

I’ve had two 5500’s from new at work. One had new shocks installed around 40K miles and the other twice in 100K miles. It’s not just the Rams either. We go thru the same ordeal with Fords.

i have Fox shocks all around with factory rear air bags work well 1 LF started leaking at 19 k LR leaked bout the same on a 15 2500 the big 5th wheel didnt help much
bout 139.00 each stock ride height

All is well now

Tramplineman, what shocks do you install on the 5500s? Also, what kind of duty cycle do you use. My brother in law wears out Ford 550s with heavy service bodies running max loads carrying and towing huge generators. They actually do pretty good. Ron

I replaced all mind with Thuren Overlands. Although the stock shocks I removed had 70k miles on them they looked in pretty good shape and were not leaking, but it didn't take much pressure to compress them all the way to the stops.

That is normal, even when New, OEM Shocks are very soft on the Compression side from Factory.
Make the ride softer over small road bumps. A strong Compression calving isn't it what a normal customer would expect - gives a harsher ride.
Rebound is what count when doing a test on an used OEM shock.

Strong on the Compression side is what counts when someone want's to drive fast over real bad roads and Offroad.

i had 2 2015 2500 LWB 8' bed diesel auto 4x4 OEM shocks LF LR started leaking at bout 20k was battling a front end rattle saw that intercooler wasnt fastened well due to ranch hand front end , and another rattle was hub bearings too, fixed all that searching for a better shock,
due to 5 miles of offroad driving on railroad granite ballast row roads from heck to and shocks were taking a beating, this truck is like new but

the big 5th wheel tow didnt help, oem shocks started leaking at top of seal, under warrranty, but could NOT get to dealership for replacement , have factory air ride rear and part numbers and applications were puzzling

Fox shocks said their will work on air ride, mystery solved, so they have 50k replacement and rebuildable body bout 140 each working fine

asked genos bout the bilstein listings or lack of for air ride, never really got a good answer still wondering why?

anyway the fox shocks r doing fine with 40 foot fifth wheel towing part time, mail ordered shocks, stock ride height 20" wheels ,bigger tires and a ladder to get into cab almost

and air ride functions fine, ?

I had thought the factory shocks were good until I replaced them around 60k miles. Wow was I wrong the truck never rode so nice after I installed the Bilstein's. My thought now is buy the new truck go home and order a set of Bilstein's and install them when you take delivery of the new truck. Why suffer any longer than you have to.

I am wondering if the shocks on the Limited/LongHorn are different than the other models???

The Shocks on my LH are US Made Nitrogen. Anyone know where the 15 and newer shocks are make on lets say a BigHorn, Laramie etc???

My ‘13 LH shocks started going bad @ 60,000 mi. RR went first, got all jittery and then the LF just went bouncy. Bilstein 4600s cured things. Over 100,000 miles and holding.
My sons 2018 Big Horn 2500 came with Bilstein 4600s.
