Studio 54....A Look Back

California out to get you again... NO SPANKING

I just got back from the Detroit Auto Show where I spent some time checking out the new full size Toyota truck.

Impressive.

I understand why DC, GM and Ford are worried.

381 hp.

401 tq.

5. 7 L is a long stroke engine.

6 seconds zero to 60...

Gas engine specs to the best of my recollection.

Might have to go drive one myself.

According to the Toyota reps at the show, a diesel is definitely in the works. They knew nothing of when they might do it and right now want to focus on the launch of the gasser.

About the truck, it's huge. I spent a lot of time in the quad cab, but they also have an extended cab with small rear doors, and a great looking regular cab. One of the regular cabs was all dressed up and was really turning heads.

My understanding is that the new Chevy has a stop gap 07. 5 diesel configuration and will be changing the motor next year. The Ford will ****can their existing PowerStroke for a new and improved version (major changes) in 08. Dodge will have a new "generation" truck in 09.

I think everyone is scrambling, trying to shore up defenses in the ongoing truck wars.

Watching one of the shows on SPEED CHANNEL and they said Toyota would have a Diesel in the new Tundra for 2008. .

That will shake some thing up IMO.

Look at how expensive Yota's tiny trucks are now, if they stay on there current path the diesel yota will be way too expensive compared to the others.

In view of Toyota's traditionally high vehicle pricing, the issue when comparisons are to be made where heavier towing is concerned, might be whether theirs is worth consideration, or for a "few dollars more', just get a F60... (I think that's the Freightliner setup some are using... )

But look at what you are getting reliability wise though. WHEN Toyota does come out with a turbo diesel full size truck, I'll be checking them out... gauranteed!! Question is. . will my 03 make it that long. Don't woorry Jim, the '93 will probably stay around for a long time !! :D

Japn'ese had better hope the new diesel from Japan is better than the last one they shoved on us. Japanese trucks have a market niche and it ain't in the 2500/3500 size. So far they realize most 2500/3500 "work" truck owners probably wouldn't buy a Japanese made vehicle as it would be priced to high for workin' folks to make any money with it.

I dunno,, I had an Isuzu diesel for years put one heck of alot of miles on it. . never a glitch, never in the shop,, until I ran it out of water in Battle Mountain.

Also most domestic 30 and under hp tractors have japanese diesels in them.

The net of it is I think Japan puts out a very good diesel!!

Better hope FloYota has improved the braking systems on the Tundra / Sequoia lineup. At one time, they had a complete "campaign" :-laf which consisted of replacement of major brake components... . larger rotors & calipers. If FloYota is so superior, why did they put such junk brakes on these truck models ?

Isn't it true that the imports are so highly priced because of the import taxes? I seem to remember in the early 80's that domestic automakers lobbied heavily for the tax, so the imports would cost more than domestics.

NO - that's what Reagan promised to do UNLESS

They brought their factories over here --- can anybody say TELL CHINA THE SAME???????

even when toyota has problems how many warranties have you heard of being voiding by crooked dealers. How about dodge. I think it will be good for the american truck companies. It will force them to step up to the plate in reliability and customer service.

When Toyota Gets a big Diesel

I live here in Tokyo and drive a series 80 Land Cruiser (my 06 CTD Mega Cab is waiting for me in CA) with a Hino built 4. 2 Turbo Diesel . This thing never been into the shop all 450k km (that is over 280k mi) on the clock and I bought it used :--) . Toyota or in this case their subsidiary Hino can build utterly rreliablediesel engines. Also remember that the 6. 7L Cummins will be available with the Aisin (a Toyota subsidiary) transmission. If Toyota ever decide to build a heavy duty truck with the a Hino diesel, I'll be the first one to jump on one but I will still keep my CTD :) .

Heaven help the big three when Toyota comes out with a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup with a diesel. I'll be one of the first to go test drive it. We currently have a 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid (wife's car). Talk about a great car. The big three cann't even get close. I do love my Dodge but there are a lot of people who might have a big three truck (I also have a Ford, and two Chevy's) but also own a Toyota car and will be willing to jump.

Grass is not always greener on the other side. Jap stuff has big issues also. I've friends with Cambrys etc. that have been nightmares with dealers and Toyota turning a deaf ear. Read some of the Nissan Titan forums. Paint issues, diff issues, water leak issues. Not defending American auto makers but the quality spread is not as far apart as some would believe. I handled Isuzu and granted it been 6 yearas back but I was NOT impressed with their little trucks or Troopers,Rodeos etc. diesel or gas. They were very cheap built.

If you read the automotive quality reports when they are published. Toyota leads in most of the categories. The only new cars I have ever owned that never went in for warranty work were Toyotas. There is a reason that they are projected to pass G. M. as the largest auto manufacturer in the world. Quality
