Major Leak From Vacuum/powersteering Pump

Lift pump-Star Hotline

On the topic of FP gauge fluctuations, is anyone else seeing their gauge rise and fall several times just after start up. Mine will peak to 12# at start then drop to 4#, repeats several times then is solid at 12#. Never happens when warm or hot, only cold starts and seems to be an electrical draw, like the intake heater grid causing it? Any others ? BTW remote mounted, post-filter Westach set up and reads very steadily after warm-up, no sender failure yet, about 5K. Thanks Jim G.

RBSOB

You are about t lose a lift pump. once the truck is running you should never see below 8-9 psi and only WOT should get you below 12 or 13. Idle should be 13-15psi.

watch it close.

Mine have been remotely mounted since day one. The first one leaked diesel fuel through the diaphram, the second started indicating wild numbers, constantly fluctuating. My fuel system is OEM except for Ray T's banjos.

RBSOB--mine does the same. Lays on 0 for quite a while (10-15 secs. ) after startup. May drop down once more, but once I'm rolling it stays at a consistent 13. My theory was that the fuel in the grease gun hose drains out when sitting for a long time, i. e. overnight and therefore it takes a little time to purge the air after startup. Just a theory. BTW, I just put in a new lift pump last week and it still does the same thing.

WYOSTEVE, bump the starter prior to starting to run the pump. Do you see "normal" pressure and hear the pump running ? Thats what mine does, it's only when I start up that pressure fluctuates and it is accompanied with a slight RPM drop and lights dim slightly. Only cold starts, like I said it seems like an electrical draw :( . Not a big concern just curious if anyone else sees this. Have Fun, Jim G.

rbsob,

I missed the cold morning part. . it is an electrical draw. . the grid heaters. 135A worth!!

I don't have that many cold mornings where I live so I wouldn't have seen it.

sorry,

Mark

i mounted mine directly to the pump, at first, but notice that my guage was sticking at 15 + psi, I forgot that when i installed my new lift pump it was putting out 18psi, so i purchased and install an 10 omh restister in line of the sender wire. this dropped the pressure down 4 psi, reading 14 at idle now.

then the gauge started going every where from 0 to 14 psi while cruising. checked with different guage, was okay. so i then mounted it remotely, and has worked fine since. I used 2 foot of old A/C hose.
