Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) where can I get a high Idle module/box?

Hi all! I'm looking to install a high idle module/box on my truck for winter. I remember seeing something like this on the web or in a magazine sometime ago but of course now that I can get it I cant remember where I found it. Anybody know what I'm talking about and know where I can get it? Its similar to a cool down timer but it doesn't shut the truck off and it varies the rpm from idle to about 1300 rpm to keep the truck warm.



I was also wondering about the flash to the ecm that is supposed to do something similar.

Is there a Tsb that would enable my year truck to do this?



What I was wondering about the ecm flash is if I drive somewhere and get the truck to opp. temp. would this High idle option/flash kick in once I'm parked for a pre set time or would it wait till the truck cools down?

Would it be better to wait till it cools down to Idle up, or would it be better to increase the idle while its still at opp. temp. to try and keep it as close to temp as possible. I think the module I saw starts varing the Idle as soon as you turn it on. (I think) Any Ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!

Do a thread search for high idle. I remember a big one where one guy even had a parts list from radio shack to make your own. You might find somthing also on the PTO idle mode, which I followed for a bit but still dont know how that works, other than an orange wire under the cowl marked "PTO".



I dont remember when the ECM idle started getting programmed, you may have it and just need it turned on. I had to re-flash and then turn on the option. This system is OK but I still carry a broken-off broom handle under the seat (your best bet for Hi Idle mode-- cheap and fully adjustable/customisable/reliable).



Whit the ECM "cold Idle" feture, if engine temp is below 140* and ambient is <35 you get 1200rpm. at 15* and down you get 1200rpm on 3 cyl's. , which with your open exhaust will sound (to me anyway) alot like the 371 detroit in our oliver tractor at the end of a tough pulling track. Once your coolant is over 140, no more high idle.



The Ambient trigger temps are read from Battery temp, IAT, and I think even the key on coolant temp sensors, and heater grid cycle does effect this. In my experience, if you time out the heater at 30*, still no high idle.



Its a fun feature but dont lean to it as a "keep warm" device.

The on BD sells is my first choice. A bit more spendy than the others, but its easy to install, works great, and has good adjustability.

Thanks for all the responses guys! The Bd high idle looks pretty cool but I'm not planning on having anything hooked to the pto so 400 bucks to keep it warm is a little spendy for me. Dark horse actually provided the link to the idler I was thinking of. Thanks!! Has anybody ever had one of these? There's not much to go wrong with them is there? Thanks again for the replies! Nate, the dealer charged me $30 for the re-flash, it is quoted as . 5hrs. on the TSB so don't let anyone rip you off. gary

What is up with these 3 cylinder deal when in high idle. I suppose that's a method to keep an increased load on the active cylinders that is greater then running all 6?

As far as 3cyl idle I kinda see that one as six of one and a half dozen ther other. I mean, more fuel/heat on less piston/block area vs less fuel/heat on more piston/block area. Supposedly it warms up faster on 3cl.

the practical solutions idler works great and is half the price of the one from BD. install doesnt get any simpler either, just unplug TPS and jumper the supplied harness in. knob turns it on/off and adjusts rpm (little screw inside the box adjusts max rpm, had to adjust mine several times with each injector change)



for the ECM reflash, the idea behind only running 3 cyl is to load up the engine a little
