I'm originally from the Detroit area, and still get back there from time to time to visit family. I was back there in the beginning of July when the new law took effect. My brother was interested in getting one of these permits and asked about it.
1) You need an 8hr (min) course on saftey and demonstarte proficiency. (cost approx $150-200)
2) You need to be fingerprinted by the County Sheriff's dept. I noticed that Wayne County (Detroit area) was scheduling appts for this into January and Febuary as of right now.
3) Turn all your paperwork in and pay for the fee (over $200 I forget the exact ammount). This goes up to the gun board and they get to take their time with it.
4) If you're approved you have to go back to the police dept and take your REGISTERED gun in and they put the make, model, caliber and SN on the permit (carrying another one is illegal).
5) It MUST be concealed. If it prints through the clothing anyone can file a nuisance report. When you have 2 or 3 of these, your license is suppended.
You cannot carry in a gathering of >500 people, where alcohol is served, courts, 1000 ft from a school (there are quite of few of these in the suburbs--almost every 1000 ft

), and I'm sure there are more restrictions. It seems that Michigan just looked at all the other states and rolled all their restriction into their law. About the only thing good about it is that MI will honor all other states permits (you have to be a resident of the state that issues it).
This is all information I've picked up speaking with gun owners and one of the guys at a gun store. If I've got something wrong, let me know. Hey StateBull626, wanna add anything?
Here in New Hampshire, you are legally allowed to carry openly. Also in VT.

Vermont has probably the best CCW law. THERE ISN'T ONE prohibiting people from carrying concealed. Anyone (who can legally own) can carry. Hmmm. . . I don't remember VT being known to be a violent place with shootout in the streets. I guess the evening news just doesn't want to cover all the bloodshed in that state.
