The other day a guy was caught, on TV, dumping his pistol into the sand at a Detroit Tigers game, while trying to grab a foul ball. The guy was an off duty city cop, so he didn't get into trouble, since the department doesn't have any rule saying how he should carry the weapon and off duty cops can carry weapons everywhere. However, if he was an average citizen, he would have been in a mess of trouble.

My question is:

Where can't the average citizen carry his licensed, concealed weapon?

They have a concealed carry law in CT, in fact, the gun MUST be concealed or it is illegal. I dont know why they dont make a standard US wide carry law. If you allow concealed carry permits, alot of people would get them, and therefore, register there guns legally. This way they could keep track of guns if they are ever stolen, and nobody (except the criminals) would have any reason to have an illegal firearm. Why break the law when you dont have to?

Civilians are not allowed to carry in NJ.

My Dad used to live in New York state. CCW was no problem there, and was good everywhere in the state except NYC. (the only place you might need it)

He now lives in Maine, and his neighbor is the Sheriff. (she is an 80 yr old woman!) He asked about a CCW, and she told him "unless you plan on going out and shooting someone, just carry it. " Gotta love a place like that!

My little brother got a CCW in Colorado when he was in college. No problem. He now lives in Maryland and works for the DoD, cannot get one.

Go figure... .

EMD, a friend of mine lives in PA. On the application, he said to put down "various" and you dont bother with serial numbers.

Just remember. . as soon as a right is regulated, it's no longer a right.

In WA state you need a concealed carry permit. Problem is that the permit is so easy to get that many illegal aliens that I knew had one.

In WA, you can't carry in a place that serves alcohol or a courtroom. May be others.

EMD... I don't recall having to give any serial numbers out here when I got my permit. Seems like I did write down a caliber, tho.

You may not carry a concealed weapon in California unless you have a "concealed weapon permit". If you want to take your weapon to the shooting range it must be unloaded and the ammo must be at least 6 feet away from the weapon or in the trunk of the vehicle unloaded. You may have a loaded weapon in your home.

My concelead carry permit has no serial numbers on it. But everytime you buy a gun, you have to fill out paperwork that includes the guns serial number. If the police type your permit number into there computer, it will list all the pistols you own. In NY, every pistol you own and serial number is printed on the back of you lisence. It usually takes anywhere form 4-6 weeks to actually get your pistol while they are updating you permit. And, you can ONLY carry the guns listed. Also, once you buy more then a ceratin number of guns, the state comes to your house to inspect where you store them every few years.

In CT, i can carry ANYONES pistol. I can have a hundred guns, no inspections. And there is no wait, you pay for the gun, fill out the paperwork, i call the permit office and say here is the permit number, and they say "OK" (unless he or she was arressted in the time between the last purchase). The whole Proccess takes about 10 minutes. I sold 4 pistols to one guy and he was out the door in 20 minutes, all legal, everything is registered. In CT you have to get finger printed and get a background check before you are issued a permit (takes about 6 weeks) then you are free to buy pistols and long guns with no wait. The if you ever get into legal trouble, they know what guns you have and they will seuspend your purchse privelages. Seems like a great way to do things, simple, efficient and as long as you never get into trouble with the Police, you are all set. What is so bad about that?

How many states out there have open carry laws? What I mean is, in Arizona, anyone can carry a gun just about anywhere as long as it's visible. You don't need a permit. If you conceal it, you need a concealed carry permit.

It is a little wierd to see someone in the grocery store packin'. You tend to stay alert!

ccw permits

Here in Michigan the CCW thing is real hot. Seems the legilature just changed it from an optional "may issue" to a "shall issue" structure. Seems the gun boards were real tight in some areas about who would get CCW permits. A lot of "good old boy" network type stuff. So here's my question for those who might know, is a holstered weapon plainly visible considered concealed by the state of Michigan. And if not, am I allowed to carry this thing anywhere? Probaby all ties into the pistol permit which restricts access while transporting and all of them other issues. I do not currently own a pistol, but have contemplated ownership for recreational purposes.

On a lighter note, I watched American Shooter yesterday and they had a great show on the End of Trail event. Anyone know where this is held and at what time of year. Looked like alot of fun and some of those participating in the gunfighter category looked real fast.

I'm originally from the Detroit area, and still get back there from time to time to visit family. I was back there in the beginning of July when the new law took effect. My brother was interested in getting one of these permits and asked about it.

1) You need an 8hr (min) course on saftey and demonstarte proficiency. (cost approx $150-200)

2) You need to be fingerprinted by the County Sheriff's dept. I noticed that Wayne County (Detroit area) was scheduling appts for this into January and Febuary as of right now.

3) Turn all your paperwork in and pay for the fee (over $200 I forget the exact ammount). This goes up to the gun board and they get to take their time with it.

4) If you're approved you have to go back to the police dept and take your REGISTERED gun in and they put the make, model, caliber and SN on the permit (carrying another one is illegal).

5) It MUST be concealed. If it prints through the clothing anyone can file a nuisance report. When you have 2 or 3 of these, your license is suppended.

You cannot carry in a gathering of >500 people, where alcohol is served, courts, 1000 ft from a school (there are quite of few of these in the suburbs--almost every 1000 ft

 ), and I'm sure there are more restrictions. It seems that Michigan just looked at all the other states and rolled all their restriction into their law. About the only thing good about it is that MI will honor all other states permits (you have to be a resident of the state that issues it).

This is all information I've picked up speaking with gun owners and one of the guys at a gun store. If I've got something wrong, let me know. Hey StateBull626, wanna add anything?

Here in New Hampshire, you are legally allowed to carry openly. Also in VT. :D Vermont has probably the best CCW law. THERE ISN'T ONE prohibiting people from carrying concealed. Anyone (who can legally own) can carry. Hmmm. . . I don't remember VT being known to be a violent place with shootout in the streets. I guess the evening news just doesn't want to cover all the bloodshed in that state. ;)

here is some info from Montana

The Attorney General’s Office has determined that concealed weapons

permits from the following states will be recognized under Montana

law:

Louisiana

Maryland

Massachusetts

Michigan

Minnesota

Mississippi

People who hold permits from the following states may not carry

Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, South Dakota.

The following states are not recognized because they do not issue

concealed weapons permits: Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio,

Wisconsin, Vermont and the District of Columbia.

Montana residents who want to know if their permits are valid in

another state must check with the specific state in which they want to

carry a weapon.

MI residents look here

For an update on the new CCW legislation look at the MSP Website and click on the CCW leg.

mdlowry- Sounds like you've done your homework. I know that in the original legislation, there was no restriction for carrying in a courtroom. This seems kinda goofy to me, since this is where the judge is going to be ******* people off the most. They may have changed that. I haven't had a chance to look since I've been on vacation.

apkole- To answer the question about carrying in a visible holster. It is not considered concealed if there is nothing over the holster, but it is brandishing a firearm. Brandishing is illegal in MI. (misdemeanor) However, this only applies if you are not is a vehicle. As soon as you get into a vehicle with a weapon on your person (whether it is in plain view or not) it becomes a concealed weapon.

I've got to brush up just like everyone else due to the changes.

I think

I think in Colo you can wear a weapon on your hip as long as you remove it for bars, courthouses, and sex. I may be wrong about the sex.

If everybody wore a 45 on their hip it would be a much more polite place... ... . Why conceal?

Can't carry

In Florida, can't carry in schools, pro sporting events, any goverment office or meeting, bars or others places of nusance. Think thats all, I'll have to reread it

Back to the original question. In Idaho, courtrooms, airports, penal facilities, some school grounds, and, as a courtesy, church. Otherwise, I pack it. Joe

Here in Utah the only places that you can't carry are Federal building including Post Offices, Jazz Games, and any where Hard alcohol is served.

When I was a kid, I found out that the church treasurer packed a pistol when he took the collections to the nite deposit box. That revelation kind of blew me away, because I thought God was gonna protect that money.
