now that there is someone interested in my snug top bed cover i'd like to ask the gang here where i can get a roll'n'lock bed cover installed for less than $1000? seems everyone in the sf bay area wants around $1200. i want it to lock to the tail gate which the pace edwards does not.

any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance... .

i'll see if there is a dealer around here. i've seen a lot of pace and roll'n'lock so i'm comfortable that they are a decent product. i've never even heard of retrax.

anyone else?

thanks in advance...

Roll Cover

If you don't want to spend big $ get the Pace Edwards Roll Top.

I've had one on the Wifey's rig for over four years now. A place in Houston, TX (I can't remember who) installed it for less than $700. 00 buck total.

The only differences between the Pace and Roll-N-Lock is $300. 00 and the Pace lock tabs in to the rails whereas the Roll-N-Lock locks into the tailgate itself. Locking into the tailgate eliminates the need for the $40. 00 Pop-N-Lock (that I never can find).

It does leak water though. Maybe the Roll-N-Lock seals better 'cause it grabs the tailgate. Also, I never put in a lower tailgate seal.

Roll& Lock cover

I have a Roll&Lock cover on my '98,fit could be better for the price. paid $750. installed myself,(takes quite a while to install). the front mounting bracket is not quite right for the truck, but it works. the clamps don't fit the bed rails quite right. doesn't want to stay locked to tailgate all the time,(adjustment needed?). currently have 2 vise grips clamped in track to keep closed!watch out if you get a little rain and then freezing temps!can't get tailgate open. on theother hand it doesn't leak. purchased in '98 at J&L 4X4 Sun Prarie,WI

excessive force..... kinda takes the wind outta my sails!! do you think having it professionally installed would have helped? here in san carlos (20mi from san francisco) it doesn't freeze much (just a little frost today).

that's a waaaaay lower price than anything in san francisco and sacramento area.

anyone else?

Roll&Lock cover

Peter, I didn't mean to take the wind out of your sails, but had to tell you about my experience with it. think i'm gonna try to re-adjust it when time permits. was installe d per instructions.

Have to agree with EF here... I bought mine from California Concepts (800-397-1161). Paid $849 for it plus $132 shipping and insurance to WA State. I got the all metal version which was stronger, so it cost more. Don't know if they still offer it. I installed it myself, but if your not handy with tools, I'd let a local distributor/installer do it. The rail clamps aren't quite right, and the tailgate lock system is very tricky... I had to modify mine to get it to lock... I'd call Roll N Lock directly and ask if they have changed the kit from 2000 (800-952-7655), when I purchased mine. It sheds water pretty well, but it will let some water into the bed in a real downpour. I looked at Pace Edwards, but didn't want one with a soft cover (vinyl over metal). The all metal version can support a couple hundred pounds, if it has to. Here is a site that sells them direct:

Have Fun!!. . ;)

Not quite correct... The Roll N Lock locks into the side rails and the tailgate. Also, the all metal version of the Roll N Lock (no vinyl cover) supports a lot more weight (snow load, etc. ) than the Pace Edwards... ;)

heyyyyy

i live near a cal concepts. i'll check with them. otherwise... . i'll talk to these folks in atlanta... . wow... great deal. i printed out the pages and will use them to help me get a better deal.

don't worry about the comments. i need the good with the bad. just makes me think that i may need to go with the professional install.

couple more questions for the learned. i've got over the rail linex. does that make it harder to install? i'd also like to keep using the front stake pocket for the tie down hooks/eyes. is it possible/feasible to drill through the front cover on the bed rail to keep using them?

thanks again, guys.

The vastly inferior Pace Edwards on my wife's truck does not look like it would work with over-the-rail line-x. Also, I don't know how you could drill through the front cover and still have it look presentable.

We have had roughly an inch of ice and six inches of snow on the Pace (on a trip). No structural problems whatsoever. Whatever brand you get (I don't care if a grizzly bear can jump up and down on it), if it gets iced, you can forget about opening it. ;)

The linex over the rail does not have any effect on the installation. As far a keeping the front stake pocket, that will be a problem... The rail for the sliding top will cover over half of the hole. I suppose you could cut it out, but I don't know how that would effect the structual integrity... ;)

How about noise from the different roll tops? Is it true that some 'buffet' in the wind & you can't drive with your rear window open because of the noise?

thanks

thanks guys

thanks for the replies.

i have found a great price in southern california. the cal concepts in redwood city was the most expensive yet. the place in atlanta is least expensive and may get the nod depending on shipping versus taxes.

i don't need the entire front stake pocket... . just enough to get that threaded stud into the stake pocket. if i can't make it look nice... i can live with out it.

it may be a month before i get it, but i will definitely let you guys know how it goes.

I've had my R'n'L for a year now. I haven't really been in any freezing weather with it so I can't comment on it freezing shut. I am satisfied with it. Paid $955 installed but had to fix installation next day, not a major problem. I don't think it will work with the over the rail bed liners. They had to cut my tailgate liner because it went over the top edge.

It doesn't seal all that well but keeps most water out of the bed. I can keep anything in it that doesn't reach down into the bottom of the bedliner ridges.

Mine is a little tricky to open, but I like that because nobody else can get it open if they don't know the trick. It appears to be locked even though it isn't. I have to pull the cover towards me before the locked can be turned. It doesn't sound like much but nobody else can operate it.

I'd purchase another in a heartbeat. I travel with pets and it is nice to be able to lock all the luggage in the bed. It would take a pretty determined thief to get at it.
