I seem to be adding a LOT of oil. At least two quarts a month.

I don't see any leaks. The bottle is empty, and there are no drips on the driveway of any significance.

It does not smoke except when I romp it due to low boost.

This Amsoil 5w-30 is pretty expensive to be just dumping.

Any thoughts.

Thanks

Dennis

How many miles were on your truck when you switched to synthetic? Could it be the rings are not yet seated very well letting the the oil (lightweight and syntehtic) blowby the rings?

Just a thought... ...

The first thing I would do is check the radiator for any sign of oil in the water. That could indicate a blown head gasket, and would merit further research.

Two quarts a month being added is a lot of extra oil. If you can't find a leak, I would go to a mechanic and start finding it.

Kat makes a good point, also.

I had 8,500 miles when I switched. I now have 28,000. The truck has seen at leat 8000 miles of fairly hard towing at about 17k gross.

Dennis... I am no expert on synthetics... I just switched to amsoil about 5000 miles ago. The first time in my life I have used them.

The general consenus from previous posts on this board is not to switch to a synthetic till after about 18,000 miles, (some say more, some say less) allowing for proper break-in. Some have posted much earlier changeovers with no problems, tho, so I would keep looking. Again, two quarts a month is a lot of oil.

Dennis,

I guess my first question would be to ask how much it used prior to the switch?

IMO, 5w-30 is too thin to be using at only 8k. I switched my 98. 5 to AMSOIL 5w-30 at 20k. Again IMO... . I don't think mine broke in till around 25-30K. Mostly because I seldom tow... . And when I do, its less than 5K.

Of course, mine hardly used any oil from day one. Some seem to use quite a bit till they break in.

I would recommend finishing the interval and switching back to 15w-40 petroleum till it stops taking oil. It'll eventually break-in. problem is, you'll go through a couple bucks in expensive oil.
