I bought a wrecked 91, 2wd, with intercool. It had front end sheet metal damage. 58000 miles and like showroom other than the short front. Someone else disasembled the truck. (I hate that) I have the truck back together and have found a wire that does not have a home. On the side of the engine with the throttle linkage, There is a set of wires that run under a bracket. The wires split, some go to the TPS and the other has a 3 wire pig tail. The colors are Org with a blue tracer, Purp with a white tracer, and black with a light blue tracer. It could go to the left fender well as I can see where a small item was bolted but is missing. The truck runs well but there is no cruise or overdrive. I think this is the reason. Can anyone help?

On my 92, the colors aren't the same ,but the wires that are grouped with the TPS I belive go to the Crank Position Sensor.

(3 wires each)

Hope it helps...

Just looked, the orange, black and purple wires (with their associated tracers) go to my TPS.

The Grey w/black, White w/yellow and the Light Blue w/black go to my crank position sensor.

Thanks XGoldman. I got a look under the hood of a 92, It is the TPS. Someone must have needed it worst than me. It is gone. I saw where the crank sensor was on the 92. Mine does not have the extra wires that run out of the same pig tail as the TPS. Does anyone know if my 91 should have a crank sensor on it?

Can't say for certain, but if the truck does not have a tach built-in, it likely does not need the CPS.

aramsey,

I'm pretty sure that 89 to93 did not have electronic automatic transmission but someone/anyone can correct me if I'm wrong.

On the other hand you mite have transplanted engine or trans.

Also does this new/used truck have and auto or manual?

(Guess this should be on top of the this reply).

You can have engine speed sensor/engine crank sensor with out having the electronic auto trans.

I believe without a speed senor no tach and diesels need to have a tach.

Mine is 96 5-spd I have the 3 plug connector hanging also, because it takes elbow grease to shift mine trans not vacuum or electronics( as an auto trns needs vacuum or electronics to know when to shift. )

I believe the '91' used the old 727 transmission (3 pseed). This has no OD in it and the TPS is used to govern the 3-4, 4-3 shift on the later A518 transmission. If you don't have the A518 you shouldn't need the TPS. The 2nd Gen trucks have whats called APPS and it does more things than the TPS on 1st Gen trucks.

Does that help?

Bob.

I am sure the package is original. It does have the 518 OD. I put the TPS on and now have overdrive but it does not stay in. I get the 3-4 shift but the transmission then jumps back and forth from 4-3 to 3-4. I read the recalibrate for the TPS from the "lock-up problem" post. I will try that to see if it helps. I still have no cruise. Will the recal help this?

aramsey,

On the cruise do you think it is electrical or vacuum related?

Electronic components or switch, fuses bad wiring?

Off the hand I can think of engine speed sensor(crank speed sensor) trans speed sensor, and tps mite be one more will have to look up.

Speed servo electric/vacuum controled.

I think your right adjusting tps should help but if it doesn't check out engine speed senor/trans temp sensor/trans speed sensor and related components, wires/ connectors/grounds.

Aramsey:

to set your tps: insert a paper clip in the back side of the tps wire connection, and hook a volt meter between the paper clip and a ground, you should have 1-volt in the idle position and about 4-volts or better in the wot position if you don't than it can be adjusted below the bracket where it hooks to the throttle shaft with a 10mm wrench

hope this helps -Doug
