Where (exactly) is the fuel return valve and how far do you stretch the spring, i have heard a lot of talk about this and after purchasing a 95 with apparently not having been maintained proprerly i would like to check it. I have been unable to locate it and if i did would not know how to check the spring??????????

It's easy to find. See this picture:

See that "stub" above # 1 delivery valve holder? The hex nut with the rounded top. At the top of the picture? The overflow valve is going to be in that area. A fuel return line is attached to it Bango style. You can't miss it.

You may have the early style overflow valve on your truck like I did. If it has a ball bearing pressed in the center of it, its not rebuildable. If it has a 3/8" nut in the center of the overflow valve, it can be dissassembled and you can check and adjust the spring. I have never takin an overflow valve apart. I can't help you there.

Like Missouri Mule said, there will be 2? thin copper sealing washers on the valve & line. Don't let diesel wash them away. Stuff paper towels inbetween the injection pump & intake maifold.

The symptoms of a bad overflow valve are:

low RPM miss/instability especially when HOT.
white smoke
hard starting
engine dies at idle
low power
fuel filter cracking

I you don't see these problems, you valve is probably OK.

Good Luck

Return fuel valve is located at the front(toward radiator) back (toward engine)of injector pump. Bolt head with fuel line tubing coming from it and heading toward firewall.
There is something( don't recall off hand) but it is washer, spring retainer ... . You need to have towel stuffed in between engine and injector pump to catch this thing or use magnet.
You have to measure spring. You can also do a fuel pressure check to determine if fuel return valve is working. I believe if you reach under(between) the injector pump and fuel filter and squeeze rubber hose (line). As I recall if the pressure comes up the return fuel valve is bad. (But I could have it backwards).
Another way is to use the prime button to to build up pressure. As the fuel goes thru return valve you should be able to hear noise.
I think you should just buy a new return fuel valve, sooner or later you will have to any way.
