Where is the Silencer Ring

OK. I know better than to ask how to remove it since there'll be alot of disclaimers. Can someone please tell me what part of the air intake system it's in so I can tear it out all by myself?

Remove the air intake hose, between your turbo and air filter. Look towards your turbo and just inside it. You will then see a plate-shaped piece of metal, that looks like the center was cut out. This is the silencer ring. It has a snap ring to hold it into place. To remove the snapring, use two small screwdrivers, start to lift one end, then slip the 2nd under it... work it til you get it removed.



Very Carefully! Do not slip and hit your turbo blades!

My turn to ask a dumb question. What is the purpose of the silencer ring to begin with and what do we gain by pulling it out? Heck, I'm gonna take it out anyway now just to see what it does.

The purpose of it is to help eliminate Turbo "Whine". It obviously works, because when you remove it, you will know. It has NO performance effect whatsoever, you gain nothing by leaving it in, lose nothing by taking it out. (Except noise)

Unless you're into high pitched noises leave the ring in that's the only thing you'll gain. Many folks have run into trouble putting the silencer ring back in, the snap ring doesn't want to fit right and should be replaced. Bummer for the turbo to eat the ring.

IN theory, you will also lose some boost by removing it. However in practicality, it is negligable. Once it's out though- be careful about putting it back in, there have been some previous posts about the retaining ring not fitting as tightly and the ring itself being able to come loose.
