Can be any tach as long as it has the switch for 6 cyl. The 93 does have a 4 pin connector under dash.

Mark, when you say "any", do you mean even a normal tach for a gas engine can be used with the 4-pin connector on the '93's? If so, I have one lying in the shop. Thanks.

I am a little slow so please excuse me! But, before I go and order myself a regular tach and attempt to conneect it to my plug under the dash could someone who has done this please confirm that a normal tach for a gas engine will work. I just don't know where the factory tach plug is getting it's signal. Thanks!

The factory harness supplies a signal from the crank sensor that was added in 1992. I am not sure if it is conditioned or not. I am also not sure that any tach can be used, but there are a lot of tachs available that will work with a variety of different signals, they just require calibration.

Good luck,

Dan

Yes, gas engine tach will work if its has the switch on back for 6 cyl. Some have a switch for 4/6/8.

Yeah, thanks Mark! Makes sense, it's just a magnetic trigger signal, right? I have a nice black tach that looks similar to the factory tachs that some first gens have. I believe it has the 4/6/8 switch. Should save me over $100, as I was planning on an Isspro tach to match the other guages. Oo. :D Oo.

Only down side is it's an 8,000 rpm tach, so more than half will go unused. Oh well.

I am also shopping for a Tach and I am thinking of the Isspro,

One little detail i noticed earlier,

If you are going to use a gas motor Tach, you would want to set it to the 4 cylinder setting. The way the magnetic pickup works on the 92-93 is the Vibration Damper on the end of the crank has 2 slots cut in it at 180 degrees apart and a magnet sends a signal each time a grove passes, so that would be two pulses per revolution which would be the same as a coil on a 4 banger gas motor.

withe the tiny tack(Y) can you wire into the 93 tach signal, or do they need to have the pickup on the injector line, I want a real unobtrusive tach just for reference mostly.

As far as I know only the injector line sensor can be used with the Tinytach. The line from the Injector sensor feeds a signal amplifier in the TinyTach unit which is very sensative and designed only for that signal. I tried an aftermarket Autometer unit on the Factory harness and could not get it to work. I have a Digital multimeter that has a Frequency counter and could'nt pick up a frequency off of the harness as well. Far as I know the only tach that will work off of the harness is the original Mopar aftermarket Tach. Harness wires are 1)+12V 2)instrument lights 3)tach signal 4)ground. With the other aftermarket tachs you have two options 1)pickup signal off of your alternator which has to be calibrated 2)magnetic sensor pickup off of the vibration damper. Not sure why a major aftermarket Tach supplier has come out with and Analog meter with an injector line sensor pickup... might have to do it myself.

I spoke with someone at "TinyTach" today, he seemed to think his tach for gas engines, which uses 2 pulses per rev would work, he is sending me one to try, and pay after I get it if it works, it's only $37 plus shipping if it works. He said the trigger threshold is around 2 volts so should work if my harness is around 5vdc. . Are the factory tachs still available?, where do they mount?

I went with the Tach for the Diesel Engine with a 1/4" injector line clamp. If they say go for it on hooking into the factory harness then give it a whirl provided they will warranty it as well if there is a problem. From what I understand about the factory Tach is that there may be a few left on a dealers shelf somewhere out there but, the part has been discontinued by Mopar. I've only seen one photo'ed in TDR and it really looks sweet, mounts right up on top of the dash. . big old honker.

The Tiny Tach wired into the factory harness did not work this was their 1c model , I sent the unit back. I may get the diesel version with pickup... . though I will call around some of the dealers around here to see if I can't get a factory unit first.
