I may be having to change my TPS if I am not able to make it work consistently. Advance Discount Auto priced it to me at $201 with a 5 day ship time. Also I would like to know the best place to get the most out my $ when and if I go for a 3kGS kit. Until I saw this on some of your postings, I didn't even know something like this was readily available. I have been reading the posts about increasing power and my toy certainly needs it.

I also want to say that this is the best investment I have made in my truck (getting into TDR). I hate not being able to get info on stuff like this and you all make it a breeze. I just hope I will be able to give back some valuable input someday.

I just picked up a TPS for my 97 at Cummins intermountain for about $150. I try cummins first for anything engine related.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I may be getting one soon. I took mine off and did a basic visual and used some electrical contact cleaner hoping this might remedy the OD lock down problem but after driving 180 mi today, my problem is still there.

Before you spend your money

I assume you've done the voltage adjustment for the tps. If so follow the same procedure and move the throttle though it's full stroke while watching your meter. The voltage should climb smoothly, if it jumps or dips the tps is your problem.

A diesel mechanic looked at my TPS and advised that he could check the voltages but there really wasn't an adjustment for it. He told me I could buy the electronic sensor and the spring (which is a little loose). Is this consistant ?

voltage test

I have not done the voltage test. I have a good digital multimeter, just don't know the correct proceedure. I see three contacts within the TPS but not sure where to start from there.

Anybody got the Dodge and/or Cummins PN for the TPS?? Looking into replacing mine now. Heading out for a search too.

TIA,

Rick

Baffled w/ TPS

Strange as it may sound, the second day after contact cleaner and a couple of drops of machine oil where the TPS engages the throttle shaft and it never missed a beat for 150 mi of over the road and town driving.

I did get the number for a local Cummins shop here in Jax, FL and will use it if needed.

I also printed out the TPC test and adjustment instructions Fleming shared with me. Thanks

I wonder if anyone makes a "patch cord" to use for testing the TPS without cutting the wires to the existing plug. .

It seems ridiculous to shove pins into the connector to attach the meter to.

Does anyone know where you could get male and female matching connectors?

I have been fighting problems with my OD and TC locking up too quickly at light throttle with associated chugging and jerking until I either mash the throttle or unlock either the OD or the TC.

I would like to be able to monitor the TPS voltage during these conditions to see what is taking place.

I've never had a problem inserting some diameter small tie wire into the female part of the connector and plugging it back together. Have found the manual recommended paper clip to be too big though.

If you lack for tie wire just strip some stranded electrical wire, cut off all but a few stands and use that to make your pigtail. Leave the insulation on for whatever length you'd like and tape the ends to the connector to keep them from pulling out.

Bill,

You must have removed the TPS wiring from the loom to be able to get those test wires in place and taped.

I read the TPS Testing & Adjustment procedure you mentioned in your previous post and think I will add the filter capacitor described there. That would also be a good place to access the wiring for the test probes.

Has anyone thought about using telephone wire as test leads? After reading the above comment concerning paper clips and electrical wire, it sounds like the small diameter and thin insulation of the tel. wire would make it a natural.
