I pull oil samples not to tell me if the oil can go longer, I pull the samples to look for things that tells me something is going south with the mechanical's of the truck, that just changing your oil and move on with your day CANT DO!!!

That was a pretty weird thing to say? change your oil and move on with your day??????? sure glad your not an airplane mechanic

I like dealing with them, really good CS, as well as great prices.
 
Thanks. Filterpro is where I priced the fuel filter and it's about $18 cheaper than the fleetguard from Geno's.

Another question, the Donaldson elf filter doesn't have a bypass valve, is this a concern?
 
I use Donaldson ELF.. Dont rule out your local Caterpillar for Donaldson filters. Many Cat dealers also stock Donaldson and Baldwin filters for their NON-Cat work. Where I work we stock the ELF filter I use since many of our EPG contracts involve different manufacturer gensets.
I pay between 8-9 each for Donaldson ELF oil filters for both my Cummins.
 
I wonder why the 03 had such a short service interval when the same engines in 2004 were 7,500 Schedule B and 15,000 Schedule A. The 3,750/7,500 is a 2nd gen thing as far as I remember.

The ELF7349 is an extended service interval filter, and is capable of at least 15K miles. I wouldn't go past 7,500 without UOA thou.
 
I picked up the Donaldson filters for $2/filter less than a LF3894. I bought a case of them for $16/filter. I change my oil every 200hrs. I used to do it every 10,000 kms or 6200 miles. (They are a bit longer changes now). My 0W40 costs ~$50/change. Similar tractor engines (at half the hp) recommend 500hr changes with 15L of oil. I use an oil pan heater, plug the truck in, use a winter front and minimize idling too. There are a lot of factors which go into recommending oil change intervals. Testing your oil I'd imagine would be the best way to determine that.
 
I just picked up 3 DBL7349 Donaldson filters which I understand is supposed to be the new replacement for the ELF7349. Only difference I can find is that it captures 99% of 15 micron particles where the ELF7349 was 98.7%, and it is painted blue now.

New version of the same filter with the same ratings. Donaldson rounds the percentage up to the next whole number, so even then ELF7349 said 99% for its 98.7% rating.

I'm not so sure they are doing that - I have ELF7349 elements on my truck now with 15 micron at 98.7% printed on the shell which is the Beta 75 rating (75-1)/75x100 or 98.7%. 99% or Beta 100 could be a real possibility which I'd prefer the reason they are using it as rounding up absolutely irresponsible and not something I would expect from Donaldson. I work with them and other filter suppliers at work and frequently have discussions regarding Beta efficiency requirements which can be B2 to B200 and higher. Whether the filters are B75 or B100, they need to clarify in their advertising. If their website indicates 99% efficiency at 15 micron, the filter industry recognizes that as B100.
 
The filter says that, but go look at the website. The website has rounded up for years, and they are not B100 but the B75 that is printed on the filter.

I have a great respect for Donaldon filters, and have promoted them for years, but they do have rounding and typing errors on the website.

I agree they make great filters and have found some of the errors on their website as well. They make excellent product (my brother was an engineering manager for them for 15+ years), and I've used many of their products in personal vehicles as well as specifying them for products I work on in engineering. Just as I experience in my day to day work, the folks running the websites and publishing the tech documents don't always get the specs right from the engineering department.
 
Another source toy try is your local Farm equipment/ industrial contractor supply. I purchase genuine Cummins filters at a local Case equipment dealer.

Depends on the 2003 engine...
Per my 2003 owner's manual the LEV (235HP) engine, Commiefornia, has a different interval than the Tier 1 EPA engines (250 305 HP). Then schedule A/B. So in effect there are 4 schedules in the owner's manual.
235 HP Commiefornia: Schedule B is 3,750 miles between changes. Schedule A oil changes are at 7,500 miles.
250 305 HP Tier 1 EPA: Schedule B is 7,500 miles between changes. Schedule A oil changes are at 15,000 miles.

I would use UOA and see if the emissions are ruining the oil on the CA engines or if it is just to keep emissions down and you can run the expensive oil longer.

UOA tells you when you have a fuel, dirt, or coolant leak into the oil before the big expensive telltale signs show up like a locked up engine. It also tells you if your engine likes the oil you are running for example high copper from the oil cooler means your engine doesn't like the oil you switched to. (Run it till it does or switch oils.) To me UOA is worth it and simply part of an oil change. Sure you get lots of weird readings at first, but, you are looking for trends over time and a good lab will call you when you have big issues before they get really expensive. You know how much fun it is to have the factory (CAT backhoe) hunt down a cracked valve cover for high silicone readings in a fleet? Those saved engines pay for UOA programs even if it is your own ride. The CAT factory changed how the valve covers were made over our warranty case FWIW.
