I want to buy the Miller 5th gear nut tool but cant find it locally. Where Can I find it and any idea how long to get it once ordered?

I'm gonna need a 4whl. drive socket/tool. 5th hasn't failed in my truck... ... yet, but I'm expecting it any time. If anyone has a tool for a 4whl. dr. they want to sell or rent, I'm interested.

Deezul 1, if we need the same tool, let's go together and buy one, then make it available for others. I wanna say it's about $40 or so, seems that's a number someone posted.

Someone posted that it was about $20. 00 for the 5th gear wrench and I want one for my tool box for on the road in case I need it out of town.

I've got one on board. Worth the money for peace of mind. You used to be able to buy online. Guess that dot-bombed:(

These tools are like a motorcycle helmet, it only needs to save your life once and then it's worth every penny.

Just ordered some stuff from them the other day. Their nmber is 1-800-801-5420. The splined socket is part 6442 (4x4) and lists in their current catalog for $31. They will provide a catalog and price list for free.

Thanks every body for fast reply. I called Miller and the tool is backordered at least 2 weeks, to bad its not available elsewhere.

The Dodge shop told me Snap On or Matco would have it but I have no clue how to find them other than driving around to auto repair shops hoping to get lucky.

If the trans is in the truck, you can use the barring tool instead of the splined socket to hold the engine/trans from turning (put the trans in gear). You might check local dealerships and borrow their tool. Std. / Trans in Fort Worth has a guy who developed a different tool like a long piece of pipe that slips over the mainshaft and engages the slots in the nut from behind. There is a square drive on the end of the tool for a breaker bar. I don't know if they are selling it, but you might ask them, if you can't get the Miller tool in the time frame you need, or if you want to use the different design tool for some reason.

5th gear fix in 4x4

I've heard the 5th gear problem can be fixed by removing the tail section of the transmission with it still in the truck. My question is, can this be done in a 4x4? Does having the transfer case on there interfere in any way?

Thanks Greg

P. S. Just wanted to know if it could be fixed on the road.

Steve, no warning signs yet, the truck has 90,000 miles on it and everything seems fine. But I pull fairly heavy loads at times, and to reduce the possibility of a 5th gear problem I usually use 4th. , especially if on local 2 lane roads. However, at times I need to get on down the road a few hundred miles so of course I make use of 5th.

From the experences of others, higher than stock horsepower + heavy loads = 5th gear failure. I do expect it to happen, so I'm gonna go in on a preemptive strike and change the nut and stake it several times.

Greg, yes you can repair with the trans in the truck by pulling the tailshaft housing, but you have to remove the transfer case on a 4x4.
