Hello all, I am new here as you can tell and Im not good with searches. Can someone point me to good places that have overhaul kits? I have a 97 and I want to do rings and bearings while it apart but the Cummins parts department scares me :--) even with my discount.

I will need Rings, Bearings and gaskets but not pistons.

Thank you.

I am also curious about what's "out there" for performance engine kits. My truck went down Saturday morning and on quick inspection I found that the number one cylinder was done (spike in EGT's or bad injector). Pulled the motor and opened it up to find that, sure enough, the piston tried to sieze. All the rest of the cylinders still have the cross hatch so I'm sittin on the fence whether to buy another enine or rebuild mine. I've seen some of the posts where some are using marine pistons and so on. I don't neccesarily want to go nuts with the project but would like to build something a lot better than stock...

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

p. s. Thanks to those who replied to my alternator question. I took off right after posting that message on a 2,500 mile trip for the Baja 1000 race.

wiederhold, no one has a "performance kit" for the Cummins per se, but there are a few hop-up parts you can throw at it during an engine build. Marine pistons like you say, some like to use Sealed Power gapless 2nd ring, I would add a cam upgrade (from Piers Diesel (PDR), F1 diesel (Bob Wagner), Scheid Diesel or Diesel Dynamics). Also think about head studs and O-ringing it and going with a . 010" over head gasket.

If you want to do more get a ported head from PDR, and then get everything balanced. If you want a couple interesting engine build photo stories check here:

This one's pretty long and almost 4 years in the making https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66674

WOW ~ Thanks for all the replies/information!

Here's the direction I'm headed at this stage of the game. I found a new longblock for a real decent price so I going to stuff it in the truck. That and have the fuel system done, the injectors aren't too old but I am going to have them tested. I am going to have the pump and turbo done as well. Still can't figure out why the #1 hole went south when the rest of the engine looked good... From there I'll put the other one in my shop "to be built" another day.

I've run Fram and Purolator filters on it. The latest was Purolator. With all the off road work I do the truck gets serviced real regular and I run Delo 400.

Fram filters are known to come apart and plug piston cooler nozzles. When that happens a cylinder fails just like yours did.
