I did a search and found where another member used his fuse box to connect his lights for his gauges, the fuse box allowed his lights to dim. Can I do this on a 96?
Photos or instructions or any help, please. Thank you.
The first thing I did was to install the Painless Wireing 7 wire thingy. . For the light control of dimmer lights I hooked to a wire out of the fuse box. Very little amps needed. With the 7 wire hook-up there is 4 key hot and 3 constant hot wires. Real nice with the load off the truck. So far, 4 gauges and one clock on it. You can find any wire that dims and use it.
I tapped the TAN wire for my gauge lighting. It is controlled by my dimmer. I think it was pin #14. Although I tapped near the switch, others have pointed out that you can hit a tan wire feeding the light near 12V outlet, and at other locations too.
On a '96 the tan wire can be found in many places. I've found the easiest is about a foot to the left of the stereo, the wire bundle there doesn't have a lot of wires and it's easy to seperate the tan one out.
Don't use the black wire that goes up to the clearance lights if you have them. I did on my 98 3500, and it ended up roasting the headlight switch over and over again.
