I was wondering where you guys drilled the new 03 exhaust manifold? Any pictures? It seems to be totally different that my old 12 valve manifold. I want my EGT probe up steam of the turbo but where is the best place to put it in that rounded manifold? Thanks Ken Irwin
If you look carefully just above the turbo flange, there is a semi-flat area, I drilled and tapped mine on the back portion, (remember not to drill directly in the center of the manifold)!!
Thanks jdh63 for the pics!!! Ok so tell me how you got a drill in that tight of an area next to the exhaust manifold. I would assume you drilled the hole with the exhaust manifold on the engine correct??? However you did it... ... ... it looked like a clean install. I also liked your dual gauge pod on the steering column. I think that is the route I am going to take. Thanks for the info. and thanks for the other responses. TDR ROCKS!!
I had to find a corded drill that was smaller in length to drill it but I was able to drill with the manifold on the truck. I posted a pic in this thread:
I am a drilling foreman offshore in the Gulf of Mexico so drilling is my area of expertise (in the ground anyway). Thanks for the compliments guys but it really was not that hard. I did not remove anything to drill the manifold. I used a Dewalt cordless drill and a succession of bits starting with the smallest bit I felt would not twist off pushed pretty far in the chuck. I also used the grease on the bit trick that I learned from somebody here at the TDR and it works great to remove the cuttings. You may have to start the hole at a slight angle but as the bit penetrates you can true the bit up to finish the hole. Sorry this is so long but I hope it helps or at least encourages!
Kirwin-Check my "Readers Rigs" pics. I posted a picture of the location. I have Autometer gauges, "Phantom" series. Match the 03 gauges almost perfectly. Grease the drill bit wwhen tapping. Any filings should (according to Geno's help line staff) blow out when you start the truck up without fouling up the the turbo. Turbo does not spool up until 1500 rpms. Had no problem going the "pre-turbo" route. Best of luck.
