I am looking for any info that would direct me to some place that I can purchase a true nerf bar that offers real off road protection from rocks etc. such as the "ROCK SLIDERZ" that are available for Jeep Wranglers & Jeep Cherokees. I have seen the product on the Jeep vehicles and they do offer true protection and a step. Would really like a pair for my 3500. Any leads would be much appreciated.

I would think with the weight of our trucks that it would be next to impossible to make something that would stand up to the weight of the truck on it. Especially with all of the weight concentrated on one point on the bar.

On a jeep, there is much less length to support, and they weigh thousands less than our trucks.

I may be wrong though. Good luck.

REAL NERF BARS

Thanks for the reply Spooled-Up, but I beg to disagree. We have bumpers from BuckStop, DOR, & Road Armour that can minimize damage from a full frontal assault @ 70mph with a deer or an elk.

The 7500 # of weight should not be of consequence to a glancing blow off a boulder or tree stump to a nerf bar as compared to that full head on impact of a deer and a bumper.

What I see on the market place is cosmetic and functional as a step, but not as a true nerf bar offering protection to the rocker panels.

Still looking.

Just have a 4x4 shop weld a custom bent pipe (bar) to your frame under your body at the length you decide on. I had this done to my dodge dakota and it looks custom does'nt cost a lot and does'nt look bulky plus it also actually works and does'nt bend.

Bellyscraper, I did consider doing just that but I am concerned about warranty issues if the frame is welded. I have seen post regarding drilling the frame but I don't recall seeing any about attaching via a weld.

I suppose one could just make a larger version of those I have seen on the Wranglers. I sent a inquiry to "Rock Sliderz" regarding their bars but I never got a reply.

I won't be able to install them till this weekend but I'll try and post some pics when I get them on. They even came flared for my duals and should help protect the fenders.

I will be interested in how they mount up. Can you shoot some pictures?

Thanks

I would be interested in getting your ideas on some real Rocksliders for our full size Trucks. There are lot's of manufacturers of Rock sliders for Jeep and Toyotas, but my search came up short for our Trucks.

I have the tools and I am starting to Fab some Jeep Parts in my spare time, If people are interested I can build what ever we design.

Would you be interested in a "Flat" step type or a "Boat" style with more than 1 hoop under the door?

Would you want them to run the full length from wheel to wheel, or just under the door.

I'll go study my truck tonight and see what I think will work.

I plan to use 1. 75" . 120 wall DOM tube, Bend it and weld it to 3/16 or 1/4" plates that can be bolted to the frame.

Let me know what ya'll think.

Ian

I'm working on coming up with a design for just what your looking at. Autocad is a wonderful thing. My plan is to use 3" mandrel bent steel and then mount it in about 4 spots to the frame. Working on a mount design now so as not to weld. Structurally, it should be rock solid.

Thanks you guys. Now we are all thinking. Let us stir the stew and add to it, I think we will come up with what we are looking for.

Maybe we are all looking for some bars that are really functional and provide protection and a step, but at the same time add to the cosmetics to our trucks.

ks, bighammer, RJP, & guava keep it coming.

I made some from sched 40 4" with slightly angled down 90 degree ends and caps for my Duramax. I coated them with black bedliner and then never permanently installed them before I sold the truck. I fitted them very close to the body to maintain ground clearance. They were so stout that you could lift the truck off the ground by them with a jack. They won't work on a Dodge due to differing wheelbases and frame locations but the concept is the same. I would not use a bar that mounts to the body (many seem to). That's just asking for it. It was an easy fab job.

Anybody with a Chevy SB CC want some real bars?

Guys take a look at these two sites. www.4crawler.com and www.badlandbumper.com Neither site offers the bars for our full size trucks but this illustrates what should be made available for our trucks. Nerf bars that offer true protection and on which you can use a hilift jack without ripping your rocker panel off.

I can't fabricate a good peanut butter sandwich muchless nerf bars.

guava and redjeepclub check out the above sites.

Would it be possible to do these in stainless that would stand up to the same rigors or would stainless in this thickness be cost prohibitive?

Here is a link (to my gallery) to the nerf bars I am building for my truck -

Nerf Bars

I am not building them for the purpose you guys are focusing on but they could be easily modified to beef them up. I am using 4in od pipe with 1/8in wall. I could have gotten heavier pipe. More brackets could also be added to strengthen the support. The two mounts are plenty strong for my 250lbs. I am going to have them powder coated red and then have line-x sprayed on the areas we step.

RedRamRod, Now we are getting there. It is very obvious that many of us are not satisfied with what is being offered on the mass produced, one size fits all aftermarket. We want what is real and functional and not just a cosmetic, although we still need a step. Obviously you have put a lot of thought in your project.

Thanks

I got the nerf bars mounted up last night. I took a couple of pics but they are to big load up in the readers rigs gallery can anyone help me with this? I can email them if anyone is interested.

I sent you a PM. Hopefully my instructions will help you, otherwise send them to me. I can post them on here for you.

How was the install? Fit well? I really like the looks of them, and I need to do something to please my wife and son. I get a little :-{} every trip. (She is really very wonderful though :p )
