Where to get air for my new Volant?

I just (finally) installed my new Volant air filter / box. Right now I'm running around with the top off the box.

I'm trying to decide where to get the air to the box. The molded nipple on the back of the box doesn't look big enough (only about 3-inch diameter) and there doesn't appear to be an easy way to make it larger. I'm thinking about using the factory location and running the 3-inch through the firewall (aka Psycotty). Will the two together give me enough air without restriction? The other option I've thought of is cutting a 5-inch hole in the hood and running a piece of tubing right down through the lid (with a rain hat on top)

Those of you who've installed a Volant, where did you plumb the air in from?

Thanks for any help.

3" though the firewall is plenty. That's how my stock box is plumbed in with RV dump hose, filter minder doesn't move. It will be loud in the cab though.

How to cut that hole?

ToolMan,

Any ideas on how to mark off the hole to cut for the factory inlet? It's a little tight to get to and I don't want to find myself trying to cut some of the plastic back on. Any "tricks"?

Thanks,

Kyle

Kyle, You really don't need to Plumb~Perfect the factory inlet. The turbo draws more air than that hole ever could even if it were pressurized with incoming intake air. The cowl side yeah I would as it will cut down on negative incoming air turbulance. and I actually am going to wrap my connection tube to the hx40 with Hvac flashing tape to act as a heat shield.

You're right, that's what I'm talking about.

I just wanted to make the hole to the fender match as closely as possible so I don't suck in engine compartment air.

The feed from the cowl looks easier to get a good fit. (i. e. it's round so a hole saw will work nicely).

kKyle, The amount of in compartment air you will ingest is temperature minimalized when you take into acount of how much heat is built up just by the action of compressing the incoming air with the turbo. Plus you at that point are so close to that opening that you will draw from that area anyways because it's the path of least resistance. Now if you were running a high H. P racing class where . 10ths are at stake then i would concider sealing that off with a icebox beforehand.
