RAndrae,

What is a cat test pipe?

a piece of exhaust pipe that is "used" to "test" for a plugged up cat converter. it is "strictly" for "testing" purposes. it is a federal offence to "tamper" with emission control systems  :-laf :-laf

How about one for a '04. 5? I'm thinking of keeping my cat in the shop as I have some mice I need taken care of. :D

And I can swear I have a Dodge Cummins not an old worn out Clark forklift. The dang cat makes it smell like it's a propane burning pos. #@$%!

Test pipe

Ahhh, I see. A "testing" pipe. Well, the UPS guy has one of those headed my way right now.

I found mine at Precision Diesel. Ask for Danny.

2003?

RAndrae,

I assume from your sig you must be looking for the part for somebody elses truck.

Does the 2003 Cali truck have the cat?

03 cat

Yes my hobby of owning and bombing my two DODGES has developed into a small bussiness. Guages ect. for other people.

The CA. 03's have a cat. Dyno runs without a cat see 15 HP increase and 50-100 degrees EGT drop.

No CAT ever on my '03 HO either. I now have the 4" Rip Rook exhaust. Just get a complete 4" aftermarket exhaust system for a '03 HO and get a free flowing muffler in addition to a cat-delete that way.

FWIW,

It is perfectly legal to install a 'cat' test pipe as part of a diagnostic procedure to see if the converter is causing a problem.

but i believe that if you are driving around town with that "test" pipe in place, you need to have a work order or something like that from a shop showing you are checking if the cat was the "cause of the problem" :D

Absolutely. It would also be easy to look at the pipe and tell if it had been recently installed or not. I wouldn't do it. 10 to 15 hp increase on at 325 hp engine? Pfah! (Did I spell that right?) Not worth it unless the cat was plugged up (of course you're supposed to buy a new cat. ) My 95 has 145k on it and I don't seem to have any cat issues (just about everything except the engine has been replaced, though. )

I know about the cat pipe first hand because I had a power loss around 110,000 miles. They took off the cat and put on the pipe. I drove it and so did the shop. No difference, so the cat was put back on.

Bad news was the test pipe was about $45 and proved nothing... Turned out the lift pump was beginning to die.

make your test pipe out of polished stainless and used polished stainless clamps. it'll always look like it was just installed! ;) :p

or you could just put an aftermarket exhaust on it and not worry about the missing cat.
