Which 3" flow through muffler?

I know it's sort of rehashed. if you've read before, i got caught with my straight pipe I can tell that the cat is clogging up on me now (as i'm back to stock exhaust). i want a flow through muffler, but it's gotta be waaaaaay quieter than a straight pipe! Which one would give me a nice tone?

I went with a Walker. Joe Donnelly has flow tested several and the Walkers come up on top. You can get them at some Napa stores and if you decide to go with one, ask for the 21468. It is a 3" in and out. There are other configurations with reguard to inlet and outlet size but let me know what you want to do and i'll get you the numbers if you want one from Napa. The 4" to 3" adapter is a 41563 part number, by the way.

I had straight pipes for about one week and i personally could not take the noise. Also i dont think you have a cat on your 98 ,but instead i belive it is just a resanator. I have taken stock muffler & resanator off and went with the free flowing Ravin exhaust i got from Midas muffler. Sounds great and very free flowing.

no, i believe that the 12valves have cats whereas they changed to the resonator in 98. 5. it's been kinda confusing, but that's what seems to be. maybe it's me, but it seems that the spool up is a little slower.



anyways, what are the prices for these mufflers? (i'm young so i need to save up) hehe, thanks.

ah, heetseeker. I'm looking for a 3" center inlet/outlet flow through muffler (no turns, just packing around the center--i know that the dynomax is only 5% restriction). nothing special, just something that works for the cheapest price. i want flow through so that i wont have to buy another muffler once i can start to mod this truck (for egt's).

I had a straight pipe on my truck for awhile but didn't like the drone at 70-75 mph.

I ended up putting a 24 valve resonator on and it sounds like I put a muffler on it. It's a straight through design and still sounds good, plus a lot cheaper than a muffler(thanks Redneckdr!).

Check with the overvalved guys. There might be someone who has upgraded to a 4" system and has a spare resonator laying around.

You will still need the 4"-3" adapter, the resonator has a 3" inlet and 4" outlet.

steve, great idea, but wihout a muffler i can get caught for modifying an exhaust after inspection..... and they'll do that in Maine. i love Maine, but the cops are waaaaay to restrictive

They let you get by without the cat, but a muffler is required?Does your future upgrade for EGT include a 4" exhaust system?

Can you pass inspection with a 4" muffler and tailpipe or what some places call a cat back?



Walker sells options for very reasonable prices.

The 4" straight thru muffler is P/N<em>21471</em>

The tailpipe is <em>54150</em>

A complete cat back system is P/N<em>19372</em>



I have a 4" exhaust laying in the garage that I got at my local muffler shop. I'm tired of the straight pipe drone, but haven't had the time to get it muffled.

yeah, a cat isn't required at all. all i need is a muffler. until i go over 400hp, i wont rely on getting a 4" exhaust system. i'm basically stock and will probably stay that way for many years (until i can afford a transmission).

I have a 3" Rhino performance muffler on mine model is #911. You van buy them at Midas, I bought mine online for 50$. It ain't any louder then stock.

The 21468 is a 3" centered straight through muffler. It gives great turbo whistle out the back and works great on our trucks. I personally put one on a 93 and it sounds like a diesel now. The cat on these trucks can be gutted by removing it and knocking out the honeycomb interior with a big a** hammer and 18" piece of round steel or such. If you are more concerned with emmissions that performance, I would advise that this practice is avoided. You can get a test pipe from the dealer or Geno's and eliminate it ''temporarily''.

alright, i'll pick one up this week hopefully. i'd prefer a little exhaust noise over stock. i'm not concerned about emissions except for noise emissions. i want flow through, quieter than straight pipe, and louder than stock (i'll settle for a quiet one). thanks.
