Considering going to 4. 10 gears in my AT as I will be towing a 13K+ toy hauler on occasion.

Whats a good brand ???

Know of a good install place in Phoenix or should I just take the hit and have dealer provide/install them since truck is only 2 months old for warranty issues, etc ???

Any other things to consider to make sure the its done right or that should be done in combination ???

Will I hate driving as a daily driver compared to now with my 3. 73s ???

I want to do it now before engine breaks in and that way there I will be oblivious to the MPG imapact whatever it is as my eng. is not broken in yet and still getting about 14 to 15MPG with 3. 73 but slowly going up :D

I usually try to avoid dealer service if I can but in this case I wouldn't take it outside of the DC umbrella due to any warranty issues that you could have later on. The last thing you want to do is void the 7/70 powertrain warranty. Although I'm sure some would argue that it isn't worth much anyhow. You'll need to do the front and rear if you do decide to change to 4. 10's.

To bad you didn't go with a 3500 with the kind of weight you're thinking about towing.

And, I don't think you would notice much difference in city MPG.

Their is an axle shop behind Bell Ford, in an industrial park. I'm sorry I don't know the name of the shop but, I've heard the guy is good.

I'm not trying to be a wise guy but, I've read on the Dodge/Cummins websites people with the same complaints as you have and the recommendation is to just downshift, when going up the hills. I know that's not what you want to here but, the cost of changeing both axles would be quite expensive, I believe. If you will not be towing that load everyday, maybe the downshifting is a reasonable option. However, I do know what it's like to go slowly up the mountains, here in AZ. And there are a lot of them.

If you don't have a "box" on your truck, the extra power provided may be just what you need to get up the mountains a bit faster & it would be a lot cheaper than changing the axles.

Just another thought. There may be someone that wishes they had the 3. 73 axles and would be willing to do a trade. You might put the word out if that's an option, for you.

TWynia,

I just found the business card of the axle shop I just recommended.

Thanks for info ...

FYI ... I called Dodge dealer to inquire and talked to a guy who seemed to know what he was talking about (?) and said parts would be about $2,000 to $2,500 alone plus a good amount of labor ... I think I blank'd out at this point :{ ... but I think he mentioned something about essentially having to replace the whole assembly front and rear and thus the cost.

On top of this, I would then have 12month warranty on front/rear end instead of 70,000 mile.

Ok, thats not an option ...

Why do you want to do this in the first place?

Also Call Campbell Enterprizes In Gilbert. Tell them Big Sarge from UROC sent you. They also Drive Dodges!

I agree, the cost of re-gearing would not be justified in the slight increase in rated towing capacity. Shift into direct (third) when you need to pull a grade. I lived in Phoenix for three years, and pulled a 18,000# gooseneck trailer. in General, you run out of power, not gears. If you are determined to change something, change your tire size - you will get the same effective ratio at much less money and you can change back easily.

i have a 2005 with 4:10 gears and would rather have the 3:73s, an axel swap would be cheaper for both of us than a gear swap and we would both have factory gearsets!! I have had 4 wheelers do several gear swaps for me on jeeps and they do awsome work, i have never had any problems what so ever. if you are interested e-mail me, -- email address removed --. i have less than 20k on my truck and only pulled one time so far, the 3. 73s would work great for me.

I will get my 5er this week and know soon if I want to go to 4. 10's ...

The reason I am inquiring is kinda two fold. For one, at least Dodge thinks it allows you to haul 3K more pounds in a 3500 so since I will be close to tow ratings it would be piece of mind and perhaps even legal amo if anything should happen (yeah, I know ... it doesnt officially change ratings and dont care to discuss that subject again).

Second, I am now running 305/55-20 tires ... a hair over 33in ... so, I have to go off and do the math but I think if I had 4. 10 it would be more like stock with 3. 73 gears ... .

On the flip side though, I just made a long drive with no load and it pulled the hills so great without ever downshifting I may not really need the 4. 10s regardless ... . will have to see how it does with a load ...
