Hi Folks.
I have an ’08 2500 6.7 auto. At 100K miles am replacing the turbo with a new stock turbo (carboned-up, preventing full travel of the VGT lever). My new turbo arrived. Here are the model numbers:
Original - 2834644
New Replacement - 3799833
The new turbo has an updated lever assembly and associated electronics, but will bolt in (I was told). It looks like it should bolt in. The only visual difference I could see, other than the updated lever and electronics cover, is at the turbo outlet.
On the outlet, the distance from the round collar that the exhaust clamp clamps to, to the end of the outlet pipe is shorter than the old stock one. As such, there will not be as much of the outlet inside of the exhaust pipe as with the old one. As far as I can see that should be no issue, but I wanted to folks on TDR a question about it. Since 2010, Dodge added an exhaust gasket (68071676AA) to the turbo outlet exhaust joint. The part number for the clamp hasn’t changed. The part number for the 2010 and up exhaust pipe has changed.
My question: with the new turbo, do I need to use the exhaust gasket for the newer 6.7s (2010+) or can I use the same setup as my 2008 has (no gasket, just the clamp)?
Many thanks !!!!
P.S. - if this question was asked elsewhere in the forum and I missed it, just point me in the right direction
05-Oct - Update - I am going to install the new turbo with the shorter "snout" (the portion of the turbo outlet past the ridge on which the exhaust clamp fits) without the exhaust gasket this coming weekend. I hope there will be no leaks!
November Update: new turbo works great, no exhaust leaks w/o using the turbo-outlet-to-exhaust-pipe gasket (i.e., just doing what was done originally, no gasket). Only issues was sealing a replacement hose (Gates turbo-outlet-to-intercooler hose - the original was torn during disassembly). Kept blowing off while driving. Used clamps supplied by Gates on clean mating ends and with a sealant, both blew off while driving. Then tried tacky sealant and used 2 clamps on each end - one original clam and one Gates clamp on each end - no problems since.
