Hey Guys ,

I have a 02' 2500 6spd HO that I bought used. It has a K&N on it But I have read where the turbo pulls the oil out of it and leave a deposit on the turbine. I would like to change to a different type. What do you recommend. MANY THANKS

I am really new to this diesel stuff but go into search and type in "AFE". This will take you to some interesting reading about what the AFE will take out of the air compared to the others. My son put one on his '03 3500 DRW 4WD a few days ago and I will probably will too in the next few weeks when my wife is not looking. We have identical rigs in color and options except mine is 04. 5.

kn filter

lots of comments on these filters. i have had one in my truck for 318000 kms. or about 190000k. no problem with oil in turbo. we use similar filters on aircraft, and these things ozz oil out the filter housing and on the turbo blades never been any operational problems related to this. however these filters are pre lubed from the manufacturer, and are not reusable.

I do believe they flow more air than a paper filter just by the sound, but when I did oil analysis I had more silicon (dirt) with the K&N than with the paper. Too me it wasn't worth the risk of more engine wear so I switched back to the paper.

I just read in TDR #45 some where in a side note that Cummins tested the K&N and found that far to much dirt came through compared to the OEM paper unit. I came over to Cummins power from a Chevy 6. 5 and a few years back they found the Amsoil 2 stage foam was best at the time. I like the idea of washable Foam but some say the oil gets on the boost sensor disrupting it on the Cummins. AFE is worth looking into.

B. H. A. F Cummins part #AH19037. Much more surface area than the K&N, now I'm not knocking the K&N. I had one but removed it when I saw oil on the turbo blades and on the inside of the intake hose. Also since the addition of the Edge EZ and extra boost I could suck the oil out of the K&N. I believe there was a post that said the CFM was 1400 with the K&N verses 6400 with the B. H. A. F. All you need to do is remove the stock air box and lay the filter on the fender well also remove the the silencer ring on the intake side of the turbo and enjoy the whistle. :D

I too had a K&N on both of my trucks. Now I have the BAHF and my silicon (dirt) is back to 5PPM (good).

With the K&N's my silicon was 34PPM (very bad) so the K&N's went in the trash. I sent a sample in for a friend who had an AFE, his silicon was nearly 30PPM (bad) and the microscope photo showed the abrasives and metal scrapings in the oil from the abrasives (according to report). Some oiled gauze or oiled foam elements seem to work ok others like mine dont. Not worth a $10k engine to get more whistle IMO.

If you use and oiled gauze (K&N & AFE) or oiled foam you MUST do regular oil analysis. There is a reason they are less restrictive, think about it.

Which AFE, with the Proguard 7 silicon issues are not a problem. However, I ran a K&N on my 00 and also had no oil analysis issues.

Checked out the silencer ring idea you mentioned. Engine book does not have any info. Removed air tube at turbo. Is the ring you mentioned like a horn held into the turbo inlet opening by a square metal ring? Removing would seem to provide larger opening and thus lower air speed into the turbo if I understand this correct.

I installed the AFE MegaCannon (the original not the Proguard 7) on my truck about 30,000 miles ago and after 7 Blackstone oil analysis my silicone level is still very low (average silicone 4 ppm).

I belive your air filter options depend on your driving conditions - a lot of dusty roads = BAHF or ProGuard7 - mostly city/highway (onroad)= gause/oiled filter... Scotty/Original AFE.

Also from what I have seen most of the problems with the K&N stock replacement had to do with sealing the edges of the filter in the intake housing... .

Best of luck

Jack

The silencer ring is on the intake side of the turbo. Take off the intake hose and you will see the center of the blades and a small area around it. To the side of that there is a piece of metal that forms something of a cone shape towards the center, like a funnel. Feel around that piece and you will find a snap ring. It can be removed with a couple of small screw drivers. Once removed you will see a larger area to the sides of the center of the turbo. If I remember correctly removing it doesn't affect performance, just let's that turbo sing louder. My ring ran away from home and wound up on the back of a milk carton :{ . With a free flowing filter that baby will sing.

Can anyone tell me if the link above has a filter that is bigger (that will still fit under the hood) then the filter numbers posted above? I would think we should be able to find the biggest air filter that would fit under the hood
