Which air horns to buy

I'm ready to buy some horns but have nothing to compare out here. I am looking for an "In your face, wet your pants as you crosswalk in front of me, shake your windows while daydreaming on your cell phone at a green light loud" I will be mounting them somewhere out of sight and as such do not need pretty ones, just friggin loud Just looking for opinions. So far it seems either the Grovers or the Hadleys. I have on board air, just need soleniods and horns. Thank you

Yea, I'm kind of looking for some skivvy staining horns myself. So far, Grover's are at the top of my list.



Oasis-3 had some really nice sounding Buell Train horns -- four horns! -- mounted under the bed, only place they would fit. They were loud, and they sounded NICE! Man, four horns is half way to being an organ...

Have you check a Big Rig "Boneyard" yet?

You should find used horns that will work for hidden installs since they don't have to be perfect.

I bought 2-24" Grovers from a truck bone yard for $20. 00,$35 for an 8 gal. air tank and finally scored a brand new Hadley 850 12v compressor off of Ebay for $55. I have the air hose that I will need. So now all I will need is a relay and pressure switch. .

Then look out... Barbie with cell phone hunting season is open!!!!!

HADLEY BULLYs for me

yup that's right gang... ... $250 from JC WHITNEY. mine went back on under the hood. originally had them on the radiator cross member. for you NETDR guys... ... YES the stuttertone is off the truck!!!!!

Hadley Bullys for me too!

Got my Hadley Bullys for $213 at Camping World (after assorted discounts). Complete, high quality kit.



Didn't drill an holes: Mounted compressor where two stock electric horns were; moved electric horns to body bolts by radiator; mounted air tank w/ large l bracket to one air box mounting bolt; horns mouned on front cross member aimin at angle towards passenger side.



Really wakes up bad D. C. drivers.

I bought 1 24" Grover at a big rig bone yard for $35. It came with the brass fittings that were on it and the little bell end holder.



Its pretty loud right now just resting under my hood, but I plan to move it up underneath the radiator. I also plan to either get a 21" Grover from Rickson's or go back to the boneyard and get another 24" if I can find one (took me a while to find the sole suriving 24" the first time).



I can't wait to get both of them mounted under the radiator that will be LOUD!





Although my current setup for air supply could use a remodel. I am currently running a 10gal. air tank in my toolbox. Takes up 1/2 my box almost. Anybody know where I can get a semi-expensive (i. e. not dirt cheap but nice) small compressor and small tank to use for my horn(s). ??

The only bad thing that I noticed about having the hadleys mounted on the radiator support is "if" any water gets in the horns it takes a few blows to get back to full sound. The horns were designed to be mounted upright and by putting on radiator support puts them upside down and the water dont drain.

Bully's Rule!!!

TNT's right, just installed them last week. I installed my set-up a little different. The bully set-up is a complete, quality kit, It includes twin horns, (attached), compressor, air tank, pressure switch, and optional electric operating switch. There are two outer brackets on the front bumper that go from the frame rail to the corner of the bumper. I mounted the horns on the left side brkt, (needs a little bench grinding for best fit), facing down,and the air tank/switch/guage assy on the right brkt. The brackets come off easy with two nuts that hold them, you can mount everything right on the bench then install. What I found was the best place to mount the air compressor was on the pass side inner battery hold down bolt. This way it's up out of the weather and comes on and off very easily if needed. I wired the air switch the only way it should be mounted, DIRECTLY TO THE HORN BUTTON!!!! I disconnected the stock horns completely, but the kit comes with a switch if you want to choose. It even comes with 25ft of coiled air hose with tire chuck. One recommendation- DO NOT HONK AT PEDESTRIANS!!!!! :--) :--) :--)

I like the large Grovers alot, though they have never made me lose bladder control yet, might be a problem for you older guys .



Hey Mark, just get a bigger toolbox and another tank .

If'n you want to make 'em wet their pants, get the Grovers that say Emergency Only on the end. These have a very different tone that WILL get someones attention. :--)

I thought "Stutter-tones" were only legal on emergency vehicles.

Yes, I've hooked up many a Grover Stuttertone (Emergency) horns on fire engines. They are also rebuildable. There is nothing at all like the sound twin stuttertones at 120psi. Traffic Will Stop when they hear these. Single sounds good too. No two sound the same exactly so there is a harmonic set up by using two that cant be beat. JMOO.

the grover just didn't get the reaction that the bullys do.

Got Air?

Stuttertones respond instantaneously at full loudness... if you got the air. Firetrucks of course have 120psi air with lots of available volume and reserve air capacity. They take a lot to work right. But when the have the air... their fast. Even some air systems on some trucks cant keep them happy. Need those 14-16 CFM engine air compressors.



Never heard the Hadleys. I have heard Buell air horns though. They use those on ambulances alot around here.



What do hadleys sound like? Train horns?

I think my single Hadley running off a 7 gal. compressed air tank at 125 psi is louder than the stuttertones on the fire trucks. I also feel you get more reaction to a blast from a regular air horn than the stuttertones.

Your funny Scott. I'm looking at a small compressor at Wally World that'a bout the 1/2 to 1/3 the size of my tank. I just wonder if I could wire it up to work?

I am a professional firefighter and I have logged some serious blast time on grover emergency (stuttertone) horns. I would bet on a decent response through traffic I'll blow those babys more than most civilians would in 5 years. Now I have to say when you lite those horns up people are scrambling for the curb. However there can be some difference between trucks or horn sets. You can tune these by turning the reed housing at the rear of the horn to get that "specific" sound. In addition I drive trucks part time and have used buells, hadleys, and others and have never seen people move like they do with a good grover enima. Finally I do belive these can only be used on fire apparatus legally so be careful and happy blasting.
