Ok I have decide to take the Amsoil plunge at the next oil change, but which oil?? There are two oils listed. One is for Diesel engines and other is for Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine engines. From the Amsoil site there is about a $1/per quart difference. Just wanting to know what everyone else is using. . (I'm guessing the Heavy Duty oil:rolleyes: ) thanks for the input. .

I was using the 5w30hdd, but recently switched to the 15w40 HDD and Marine... and I think I'll be stick'n with it for a while.

I personally feel that the 5w30HDD is too thin for our trucks.

I use the Series 3000 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil been using it since 95 and no problems. I use the 15W-40 in my tractor. But either one I think is fine. 15W-40 is cheaper. I was leary about the 5W-30 when it came out but I kept reading more about it so I decided to try it. I thought it was too thin too but it holds up good. They were using it in some big 18 wheelers with no problems. You can put more miles on the Series 3000 between changes. Its what ever you want to use. Its your call. Go to their site http://www.amsoil.com/ and read all about it.

I'm real happy with the 5w-30. After 10000 miles of hard use my oil analysis came back fine and to continue using it. I had already dumped it, but I'll know better next time.

5W if up North and 15W if South

I ran the 15W40 for 50K miles. Two changes. Switched to the 5W30 after that. Have ran that about 70K. The 5W does much better then the 15W in temps below zero. Based on the oil analysis the 5W will last longer and does as good or better the the 15W even in the summer heat. I did see a very slight increase in MPG with the 5W (would expect with lighter oil). Oil consumption is about a quart every 6K at 200K on the engine.

If it is a cost thing, I would stay with non synthetic. or be willing to run this stuff 3x or 4x your normal change interval.

If one never operates in temps below freezing, the 15W should be more than adequate. The 5W really shines in temps below zero. The 15W still cranks hard down around -20 even though it is full synthetic. I stilll think the first few minutes at startup do all the damage.

I run 4x or 25K between changes. No bypass just a Stratapore every 6K.

I have a oil temp gauge BTW! The 5W has never got to 220 degrees even flat footed for hundereds of miles pulling very heavy in July. Running empty it runs about 175 in the winter and 190 in the summer.

I'm using the 15W-40 HDD Marine. The one thing that really made me smile was shortly after the change to Amsoil, I was getting out of the truck and walking away and heard a new sound

Like the rest of you, new sounds are always reason to go snooping. Turns out it was the turbo continuing to spool down. :D :D That NEVER happened with the standard oil I used. Now, the last thing I do (almost unconsciously now) is listen for that sound when I walk away. Slippery little booger aint it.

I switched from Red Line synthetic to Amsoil 15W-40 Heavy-Duty Diesel & Marine (HDD&M), later switching to Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30 HDD when I added my Amsoil Dual Remote Bypass filtration system.

However, after careful consideration I decided to go back to Amsoil 15W-40 HDD&M mainly because I was tired of the increased amount of oil mist (vapor) present from the blowby tube while using the thinner synthetic. Also, some careful math calculations showed I would actually save money if I used the 15W-40 HDD&M with a 10k oil change interval (replacing both the full flow filter and the bypass filter at the same interval) as compared to using the Series 3000 5W-30 HDD using a 20k oil change interval (replacing the full flow filter at 10k and both filters at 20k + 1. 5 qt. of makeup oil at the 10k full flow filter change). Personally, I like the 10k oil change interval... it works very well for the specific usage of my Ram. :)

Thanks for all the input guys... I will be going with a 15w40 oil and will probably be the HDD&M oil. I am planning on a 10,000 or 12,000 oil change interval with a filter change about mid way. (No by-pass system. ) I have racked up 19,000 since I got the truck in July and I need to change my oil maintance plan... I am currently using a John Deere Oil called Plus 50... 15w-40, but it is not a full synthetic. (Good for extended intervals if used with a fleetgaurd filter. I have run it in everything. ) Just looking to try something different. . Thanks

I use 15W40 HDD & M oil and have been real happy so far. It starts pretty good even at 0 degress without being plugged in. All my oil samples have come back good as I change the oil every 10,000 miles and change the oil filter and 1 qt make-up every 5,000 miles.

Like JJW-ND Said...

And if you really want to save money, run a single bypass and do oil analysis. I change full flow filters at 18,000 and haven't changed the bypass (or the oil) yet. If the bypass is still flowing, it's still working. There is no bypass valve in it!

I run the 5w-30 because of the cool temps in the winter and have gone 3 years since I switched. I add 1 quart of make up oil every 3,000 miles.

Traktornut,

Both of the oils you mention are Heavy Duty Diesel oils. I used the 15W-40 HDD&Marine for the first 105,000 on my "94"Ram, then changed to the 5W-30 HDD Series 3000, and now have upwards of 136,000 miles. Both oils are excellant oils!

When you changed to the synthetic, especially the 5W30, what kind of change did you see in oil pressure? Are you using a single or double bypass at all? What year truck?

Thanks,

Todd
