Towing with a 2 wheel drive

GVW and tongue weight

I tow a 14 k 5ver with my 04. 5 3500 DRW 6 speed manual.

My truck is stock and am not interested in making the most HP or lighting up the tires.

When I was pulling home from KY to Seattle this summer and you are rolling along in the roads or pushing some wind ( which I am always doing :-laf ) I would like to have a little more pull.

I do have gauges.

There are so many choices that I read about but most are people who are looking to bomb and go for max power.

I just want a little more SAFE power for pulling and when empty some more MPG would be nice.

Thanks for any input and am looking for guys that are pulling heavy loads and what there input is. Thanks again :)

I absolutely love my TST, I know it is more box than you are looking for, but, the ajustability on the fly is the best, plus you are ready for any future upgrades should you decide to do that :-laf . You can also remove it in about an hour, tops, if you need to take it to a dealer.

The new TST with all 4 programs, which includes an economy program is in my opinion " THE BEST" :D

Smarty... . put it on level 1 (30hp) or 2 (60hp)..... and you'll have exponentially more bottom end, quicker boost, normal egt's (they dont get out of hand on the lower levels)... . and either of those levels help improve mileage... . all things being equal... .

You could also look at the quad towing box (less expensive), I personnaly just dont like adding pressure, but everyone in your situation seems to like them.

Who makes the Quad box?

Smarty ?

I thought of the Smarty,

Does any one know how much timing is added ?

I read some where that for heavy towing should not use it?

Software number One,

The Fuel Saver software. Mpg gains vary, in most cases a + 2Mpg has been reported.

Please notice that the timing in this software is rather aggressive.

HEAVY TOWING is not recommended with this software.

I'd sned Bob Wagner or Marco a pm... . they'll tell you anything you need to know about smarty... .

Also do a search or post on Towing with Smarty... . sure you'll get some feedback from those that tow heavy with it... . good luck.

I like the edge w/ attitude. Guages, 5 levels, turbo timer (which I love), and you can turn ot off when you dont need it. Just my opinion.

I am also looking into a box for towing, not into all the other stuff. Quad has a nice towing box - Quad XZT. I believe it has a stock setting, then 25-45-65 hp levels. I took the time to read about all the Quad stuff and have decided to go with the Zillaraider STD box. It has a stock setting - and 3 power levels going up from there, the lowest being the highest of the XZT. I noticed many of the guys that started with the XZT moved up to the STD box and saw a lot of the XZT's in the classifieds here and there. For the little money difference it seemed smarter to go to the STD box.

Good luck with your choice.

I've had the Edge EZ which worked okay and the Quad Xilleraider which I had nothing but problems with and finally shelved it. I'm running the BD xpower and so far I really like it. The BD is timing and duration only and is very driveable, has good useable power and is adjustable on the fly.

Same here, and Quadzilla couldn't fix it. They finally quit returning my calls last year. Can't recomend it. Van Aaken makes a nice little pressure box that works well for towing.

I'm in the same boat. The EZ worked good, but was kind of a pain to adjust, the Quad is on a shelf in the garage and I'm trying the SPDiesel IIe right now.

TST R49, do it right the first time....

The new TST R49 is awesome and has a cool down timer or will shut off when it reaches a pre set temp that you set. It also has safty features like over boost and you can set it where you reasch a certain EGT it will ease up. My vote goes for the TST, you won't be sorry... 200 hp and "600" lbf-ft should get you around any thing your trying to pass or climb any hill your going up with ease... I have mine stacked with a SMARTY!!! & OMG! Oo. :-laf I haven't done any MPG figures yet, but last month was the first time I had fuel in my aux tank left on pay day, so I know that I'm doing better. TST on 2/2 with 3 degree's of timing and SMARTY on 2... Standard program Oh, and I can add pressure "if" I want too, like a MP8. It has everything wraped up in one nice neat package... I don't see how anyone could go wrong...

I like the Edge/Attitude for towing. Covers all the bases, safe power, and automatic defueling at whatever settings you want.

Gary

+1

The Attitude has a nice display that gives you all kinds of information and you can set it to defuel based on boost, EGT's, trans slip, etc. Very easy to install... . probably 15-20 minutes. I have seen a few used on TDR and DTR from people that have sold their trucks.

The five modes are Mileage, Tow, Drive, Race, and Extreme.

I have mine in the Drive mode when not trailering and love it. :D

i would also recommend to stay away from the quad boxes i had one for almost a year and it worked good, then it started throwing codes i sent it back 3 or 4 times to be fixed and it never was fixed and there customer service aint much either
