Fuel Preporator and Pump Question

I am wanting to put a chip in my truck, but I am unsure which one would benefit me the most. After reading this issue of TDR, I am still puzzled. I tow around 17,000 pounds, and I realize that I probably couldn't use it towing because of high egt's. Does a pressure box such as the Edge EZ or Bullydog Torque Dog hurt the long-term reliablilty of the rail system in the future. I don't know if I like the idea of the pressure relief valve opening everytime I run it hard on a high setting. I would like to get rid of the engine lag I have when accelerating. My truck really doesn't accelerate hard until 1800-2000 RPM's or so. Would a box help the low end acceleration? What about the Volumizer or Van Aiken are they pretty good boxes. Sorry for the lengthy question. I am having a hard time deciding which would be the best for me, and which would hurt long-term reliability the least. Thanks for any advice.

A timing and duration box would help keep your egt's in check. I towed for a while with just the Edge EZ and you could tow in level 1 2 and 3 and keep egt's in line. With the Attitude/juice you can simple set your max egt point and it will automatically defuel to keep the temps where you set them. TST has a similar function as well as the BDDL. Do you want to grow into a box or just have one that you don't have to worry about upgrading everything? Your drop in filter will help a little with egts but a BHAF (Big Honken Air Filter) will help even more. Your 4" straight pipe will help you out too. With your 6 spd you can put a little more power down with out hurting your truck unlike us auto guys with a stock transmission that need to be more careful. If your worried about long-term reliability any time you add more fuel or horsies to your truck it will wear faster then if you were to keep it stock... There are people on here that have 100k+ with mods with no problems. If you keep your maintenance up and take care of your truck it will last for a long time. I pushed my truck a little to far and had to have my whole transmission replaced. With a mild pressure or timing/duration box you won't have to worry. I would recommend getting gauges for your truck. TST, Bully dog outlook and Edge Attitude have digital gauges on them. I'm sure I'm missing a bunch here but hopefully it helps.

I'm kinda leaning toward the EZ or Volumizer. Seems to me the volumizer would be the best for the low-end power, timing, and in-cab adjustability. The TST is too much power for me. I play on keeping my stock turbo. Do you all like the volumizer???

Clayton, I know you have been testing the Edge Juice/ Attitude any inside on when it will be out for the 305/ 555 guys?

I know, I know, next month!

Strictly for towing, the VA pressure box works for me. Good improvement below 1800, but it tapers off above 2600. It gets the power up down low and limits the pressure on the high end. I tow a 12,500# 5W and it is just right for me. EGT never excedes 1,100-1,150 deg. (pre-turbo), I also have a Scotty III and 4" exhaust .

Talked to some of the guys up there a week or so ago and they confirmed my address so they could ship the updated unit to me. I would imagine it would be another week or two after the beta testers receive the updated box before it's released into the market. So "Next month. " ;)

I just installed an Edge EZ in my truck and so far I'm happy with it. I really can't get into specifics because I have less than 100 miles on it but I know I have more power on tap. I have it set on level #2 since I will be towing my 10k fiver and would like to keep my transmission alive for awhile.

I picked Edge for there top notch customer service. Furthermore, I feel Edge puts a lot of research into there product before releasing it so I trust it to be safe and reliable.

I have used a Bully Dog Downloader on my 2004. 5 for about 2500 Miles. It is set on the performance setting, (90) hp. It runs great, but I have to keep a eye on the egt. It reaches 1050 after turbo when pulling a load and despite what you may have heard, the outlook monitor DOES NOT defuel the truck to bring the egt down! I have had bully dog replace my outlook monitor, and it still doesn't defuel. Even when I manually lower the power output with the joy stick from 100% to 0% which should put the truck back to stock, it doesn't change the egt or the power of the truck at all. I would like to hear from someone else who has the outlook monitor installed to see if I am the only wone that has the same problem. I love the performance and am going to keep the set up for my truck, but I thought that you might like to know what I have found out with the BDD on my truck. PS it lowered the fuel milage 1-2 mpg, and smokes alot under hard acceleration, but what the hell if it's performance you want, it does the job.

TDR issue 47, pages 56-57 show dyno results from 9 boxes. To me the EZ has the flatest power band, some of the others are quite "peaky. "

I've ran my EZ on levels 4-6 for 60,000 miles with no ill effects.

I agree the article was confusing. It seems all the boxes put more hp than the turbo will handle. very hard to see the small print on the graphs. it would be good to know which one gave the "50 rwhp" and may aid mpg. Doc
