What is the greatest invention from the technicial revolution?

Which way do you like your Toilet Paper?

Dell all the way baby! Im in the Navy, and the whole west coast including all ships have been set up using Dell, and I know the abuse those things take, but they still run like champs. That convinced me when I went and bought one. I had an old Compaq laptop that gave me nothing but heartache. There was a problem with that model so when you used the battery on it, the computer would lock up and you had to enter some code at startup to get it to work. I'm not to computer literate, so it just sat in the box most of the time. A laptop that cant use a battery?? Get real.

Pretty much all of my computers over the last 6 years have been built out of bits and pieces by me. The one I'm typing this with is an AMD K-6 233, with 64 megs ram, 8 meg video, 17 inch monitor, two 2-gig drives and running win95.

I have a pent 150 with 15 inch monitor, and a dual pent pro 200 with 64 megs and 2 4 gig scsci drives - both of which have FreeBSD installed on them.

One is the dialup machine for my little home network which we also use to surf on, play games, edit graphics and other things, and the other machine is one I use to practice stuff on, like installs, and trying out different server software.

I also have a Pent 150 laptop made by Toshiba - it has 80 megs or ram and 1. 2 gig hard drive space, and runs win95 as well.

Of course you can update a HP or Compaq. They aren't that different from the custom built units. We've upgraded ours through the years with much success. We're even considering a motherboard and processor for the old Packard Bell and making it our project hot-rod. What part of these "name" units can't be upgraded or changed out? And when do the problems start? We've been trouble free for several years. Even the old '94 Packard Bell is still as reliable as ever. I upgraded the processor and modem a few years ago and it's been running like a champ all along. My Gateway owning buddy swore up and down when I bought it that Packard Bell was junk and I'd regret it. I'm glad I didn't listen to him. He's had his share of component failures. We've had years of good service.

Yes its true, (from a web guru friend) alot if not most websites are at least originally created on Macs partly because of its foothold in desktop publishing - Macs still have alot of publishing symbols/characters that are VERY tough to reproduce in windows. Also your favorite Movies too - easier digital editing. Also a favorite in ALOT of recording studios of people you know... For most of us Mac users its NOT that we hate Bill uknowho [ by the way Bill is the #1 Mac software producer!!] or worship Steve youguesswho. Its hardware - seems like its easier to get a RISC based processor to do multiple tasks painlessly than it is a CISC based processor. Don't believe me, tried a G4??? I just don't like having to do the thinking for my computer!;)

I have several.

  • A custom-built PC running Windows and SCO; recently put a new motherboard in it.
  • Motorola StarMax 3000 Mac clone running MacOS9 and BeOS
  • Rev 5 and Rev 6 BeBoxen; Linux on the Rev 5 and BeOS on the Rev 6
  • Dell i7500 laptop running Windows, BeOS and Linux
  • Motorola CPX2000 compact PCI cage with an MCP750 PPC board running Linux, and 3 more I hope to get Linux running in a Beowulf config
  • My brother has, in his 'museum', my original AT&T UnixPC - the first Unix with demand-paged virtual memory

This is only my second computer. First one was a Pac Bell with a 486 processor. I still have it here somewhere.

The "new" one is a HP Pavilion. It has a Celeron processor, and a zip drive. That's about the only thing I know about it. The only thing I dont like is I cant burn my own CD's. I cant complain though, I got it for $350. 00!! :D:D

I have two custom built P. C's . I wish I had started with Mac. Windows is such a P. I. T. A. If you build one for buisness you can't game on it, if you build one for gaming you can't edit video on it, etc. etc. you have to have one for each application!! Unfortunately, most software is written FOR the Windows platforms and Mac gets the altered copy. Only a few programs are written Mac specific, BUT, they work Very Well and they don't share it with the p. c. guys. Final Cut Pro being one of them. I am going to get me an IMAC to start out with. I will be able to change out hard drives at will (very quickly and simply) I can name a file anything I want to! Apple's operating system is the actual operating system not an overlay like Windows! Do I sound totally DISGUSTED with Windows and Bill Gates and computer instability etc. I am sorry, it wasn't my intention.

My son built mine. Big screen, faster than blazes, lots of horsepower.

A few years ago I brought home a used computer from the office, and the first thing I know he has to try to figure out what makes it tic. I thought he ruined it, well actually he did ruine it, but he figured out what makes em tic. Now he build them, fixes them and sometimes screws them up, but he really knows them inside and out.

Now that I think about it, thats kinda what I did with my cars. Now I fix his cars and he tunes my computer, I think its a good trade off. Most parents want their kids out of the house at 18, John is 26 and I hope he sticks around a few more years. It sure saves me a lot of headaches. :D
