Which Differential lube/weight.

I am planning on changing my fluids this weekend and was wandering what weight I should go with. I am going to go with the Chevron synthetic and they offer two visc. One is a 75-90 and the other is a 80-140. Neither has the limited slip additive in it. The put the limited slip additive in their dino line and their RPM synthetic line (75-90 only) , but not in their Tegra line.

Are you towing, and if so, how much weight? IMHO, for running empty or towing light loads, 75w-90, but for towing heavier loads (8000 lbs and up) go with the 75w-140. I just put Amsoil 75-140 and a Mag-Hytec cover yesterday. The 75w-140 doesn't seem that much heavier when you pore it than the 75w-90, so I don't think it hurts to use the heavier weight stuff in any application. With the Amsoil, the 75w-90 is really a pretty light blue color. The 140 is kind of drab. Well, I'm sure it matters to someone.

If you tow, go with a good synthetic 75W-140. If you don't tow, a good synthetic 75W-90 will do the job. Personally, I prefer Amsoil, but that's another story.

I'm putting Amsoil Series 2000 75w 90 in both of my trucks.



I was debating this same question for a little while, but decided not to go with the 75w 140 just because of the cold winters in Coloraodo.

I use Chevron's Delo 80w90 front and rear; no LSD additive and I can get down right rude with some of the stuff I tow around. 75w90 is all you need.

How many Miles???

How many miles onl your truck when you guys are changing the fluid in the Diff's. I was checking the OM this morning on the way to work. . (long drive. ) and It said every 15,000 miles for one schedule and It never listed on the other schedule. . (Over 150,000 on the same fluid. . ) Not for me... Just curious to see when everyone else is changing... Thanks

I use Amsoil Series 2000 75/140 gear lube in my diffs. Good stuff and I don't have to put in any limited slip additives. A 5 gallon of this stuff runs about $170. 00 or so. A little expensive, but I consider it "cheap" insurance for folks how tow alot.

42K on the 75W-90 in the transmission; 38K on the Series 2000 75W-90 in the differential, with a significant amount of towing(probably 25-30% of lube interval mileage). I would go with the 75W-140, even where you live. Just take it easy for the first mile or so, when it's really cold. The Series 2000 stuff is good in both weights and won't treat you wrong. I did lube analysis on both lubes at the time I drained them. The numbers were very good. I posted the numbers for the differential lube.
