If all you want to do is have a dyno sheet to hold in you little hand and gloat, that would be cool. But I dyno for a different reason , that is I want to make more usable power that will propel a drag racing truck or dragster down the track. A chassis dyno is totally worth less unless its can hold the motor in one place and accelerate it the same RPM per second climb every time. I hear that Dyno dynamics can, but never have got to play with one. With a chassis dyno if you make more power it accelerates the wheel faster. What did we really learn, that would be useful at the track. A little, but so much is left on the table.
EXAMPLE;
A particular motor makes 600 hp at 500 rpms per second accelerate rate, on a given chassis dyno, if you pick it up 40 hp with a new gee whiz device , and now it prints 540 hp, you have increased the RPM’s per second by a given amount for it to register that gain, that’s the way it works.
But what if you wanted to see what the motor did at only 500 rpm’s per second, or 250, or 1000 rpm’s per second, you’re out of luck. Why would you want to know this, well its simple that might be the rpm’s per second you truck accelerates going down the track in a pedicures gear.
Well maybe you gee whiz device makes more power at in low gear at 1000 rpms per second with it on stage 99, but at that setting would smoke the pistons out the stacks in high gear where the motor is laying on the converter at a lazy 250 rpm’s per second.
What did this teach you , and how do you use this to make you truck go faster, well the old way you ran the whole track once at 99 and when it prayed to the aluminum god, you kicked the side of the truck and loaded up your toy and went home. This makes you do several things on Monday morning after the tow home.
First you call the manufactory of the gee whiz device and cuss them out , second, from now on you run it much lower setting where its safe , and run the whole track fairly good , and safe. But what you never knew is you could have run first gear at 99 safely. Why, because at higher acceleration rates you build less piston melting cylinder pressure and this knowledge lets you gained a tenth in you 60 foot and total or 2 tenths in the pass.
