When I try to order parts for my 91 Dodge W250. I am often ask which Cummins Diesel engine do I have 8 or C. My truck has a factory intercooler, so it is a later model 1991 engine. Unfortunity my 1991 factory Service Manual does not even cover all the systems on my truck. Can anyone tell me the difference between the 8 or C diesel engines.

You have a B series engine 5. 9 L I6. The C series is a bigger unit found in motor homes and medium duty trucks.

You should have a plate on the drivers side front of engine mounted to the fuel pump housing. It will give you all the info you need to order parts and satisfy the anal retentive parts people.

I believe he is referring to the VIN code for his engine. If this is the info you are referring to, then it is the 8th digit in the VIN and 8 = non-factory inter-cooled and the C = factory inter-cooling.

Differences here:

PS There is an error in the 91-93 FSM, the VIN Decoding only shows the 8 and not the C, the C is valid for all Factory inter-cooled engines through 93.
