I've seen this question posted many times . . and never a clear answer.
I've been around several modified exhaust CTD's and heard the differences at most of the operating ranges, and have experienced this "drone" sound.
But its very hard to put into words. Kinda like describing that shreaking noise the old lady emmits when you try to justify a bombing expense . . or worse . . a new truck!

When folks refer to "droan" I think of it as a harmonic resonating type sound. One that's more like a humming or high frequency vibrating sound than a rattle. Sorta like a bee-hive that's about to go into melt down.
It's a sound you "feel" not a rattle.
