I have been looking at putting a 5" turbo back system in my 06 2500. I was looking at silver line, mrbp, magnaflow and rbp. I want to make sure I don't get a drone. I had the banks exhaust on my 01 and the kids couldn't hear anything from the backseat. This truck is bone stock with 130k miles. Starting the upgrades now. I know I'm a little late to the game.

Thank you Tramplineman. I was also wondering if I went with the 30" resonator 5" dia from FTE Diesel if that would help the drone. I understand the 5" exhausts are loud. I am ok if it is loud outside but not in the truck. I often drive long distances and will be traveling to WA state from TN this summer to pick up our horse. I guess he will be deaf.

I have the FTE 30'' res. with a 24'' Flo Pro straight through muff. Well mannered sound, not near as loud as a straight pipe but more throaty then stock.
The flo pro with out the FTE had drone,...=drove me nuts!!
I have the 4'' turbo back, dont expect that will make much of a diff....

The 5" exhaust are not recommended for a close to stock truck, it tends to hurt the low end power a bit and really doesn't gain you any performance. A 4" mandrel bent exhaust is more than adequate for performance needs to well beyond 600 HP.

I think the drone is terrible on a straight thru exhaust, especially running loaded. A 5" exhaust is just that much worse. A 4" exhaust sans the CAT with a Aero Turbine was even more drone loaded than I cared to listen to. I added a 16" resonator and that made all the difference. It sounds really good at an idle, makes some noise when you get after it and there is literally no drone under load at speed. If you add a 5" tip it helps deepen the tone a bit. The dual resonators take the raspiness out that is the annoying sound of small block engine and straight exhaust.

If you don't want noise, the stock muffler can't be beat. But if you are looking for a specific sound, or are bombing the truck I'd say check out the nearby shops and listen to the trucks they are working on and pick the muffler that has the sound you want, or can live with as you are rolling down the highway.

I have a MBRP 4" turbo back with 5" tip. Better response at all rpm. Only time drone is noticeable is pulling 10K + at 65 to 70. But nominal driving and less than 2000 rpm not very noticeable. I have had MBRP on a number of diesels - always have fit correctly and parts are high quality. They will have sales from time to time that makes the cost within 80 dollars of a stock replacement muffler and tailpipe.

I have the MBRP 4" turbo back with the 5" dual wall tip. The MBRP muffler could be installed with the internal "fins" pointing forward for quiet or reverse the muffler with the fins pointing backward for more rumble. I opted for the fins pointing back for more rumble. I have loved it since the day I installed the system. I get that Cummins bark when working her and yet it is quiet in the cab. No drone!

how about and exhaust manifold? I see BD, ATS and AFE. Any thoughts on what is better. I am trying to get set up for a better turbo.

I still run the stock pipe, did some custom cutting to remove the factory converter and put a 30" FTE resonator in its place and put a muffler delete pipe in place of the OEM muffler. Didn't see any reason to waste a perfectly good full 4" exh pipe system when its not needed.

How does this compare to straight pipe? 1/2?

Still has a nice exh note out the pipe and can hear it in the cab but the drone is gone, I ran with the converter and straight pipe and I couldn't stand to drive it anymore the drone was so bad which is why I chose the 30" resonator to kill the drone and quiet the exh note just a bit which it accomplished both.

Why don't you stop in over at MM1973 forum anymore? Its me Wild and Free.

Billie!!! Oh my!... Its been a while. What eva plagued you to use a Spanish bull as your aviator??!!
Well, TDR was where i started and has been my favorite. I can only spend ''so much'' time on-line so i felt the need to make a chose.

I hear ya, this is where I cut my teeth in the forum world lol, this was the first ever forum I signed onto at the recommendation of an old co-worker many years ago but I faded away as more local and smaller more personal ones popped up but I do still check back on occasion.

If I did an exhaust mod on my 3rd gen I too would just do a muffle delete and add a FTE 30" resonator up front. The exhaust is still good on my 03, if your 06 is okay you could just deal with the cat some how like was suggested above and do a muffler delete, easy and quick.

I have straight piped my 12 valve for years with the delete pipe and later a much louder 4" system. It's so loud while towing it gives me a headache with the windows up now. Pulling a hill at 25 psi is LOUD. I'm going to install a 30" resonator on my 2nd gen soon. That truck really needs to be toned down, it has the source automotive straight 4" with a turn down in the stock location. I've gotten too old for that raspy ear killing sound level. I'm going to stick the resonator on this month. I wouldn't want to do a straight pipe again even on my play truck.

We have a 04 with the Magnifolw 5" exhaust on it and it sounds great not no drone and with the windows up not much more noise then stock.
